What we’re about
Revised 6/5/2021: This Meetup group is operated by the Mountain Club of Maryland (MCM), a nonprofit outdoors club that engages in hiking, backpacking, canoeing/kayaking, and similar outdoor activities. We are centered in the Baltimore metropolitan area, but we hike throughout Maryland and in nearby states. Membership in MCM is open to all who enjoy being outdoors with a group. For a small annual membership fee, our members have access to more than 300 hikes a year offered by our volunteer hike leaders. To join, or to learn more about MCM, go to Mountain Club Of Maryland HOME PAGE (mcomd.org).
When you attend an MCM Meetup event, you acknowledge that there are inherent risks in hiking and other outdoor events, and you assume those risks, and agree that the MCM, its officers, representatives or leaders shall not be liable for any injury, loss, or damage arising out of the activities of the club.

- Easy side of moderate hike in the Hollofield areaHollofield Area, Ellicott City, MD
This new hike will be about five miles with 700 feet of ascent. We'll have a nice view from the Patapsco Overlook where one can see miles up and down the river from high above the stream bed.
We'll meet in the Hollofield area of the hike (39.2958, -76.7828, just off US-40 at 8020 Baltimore National Pike on the south side of the road), If you're coming from Baltimore, exit to the park HQ BUT cross under US-40 to the sentry station in the Hollofield area. I'll e-mail you a map the evening before the hike. Park by the stone restrooms.
NOTE*NOTE*NOTE ***We are NOT parking at the park HQ***
Also note that the park doesn't open until 9 AM.
There's a steep, rocky descent of about 200' at the beginning of the hike. Much of the hike is rocky so hiking boots and trekking poles are highly recommended. There are no significant stream crossings.
BGE is upgrading some of their facilities in the area so, while I've tried to avoid their work areas, we may need to make some last-minute changes.
We'll also make a last-minute on-site decision about adding about an additional loop led by Lawrence (about a mile and a half taking 45 minutes or so) to the hike.
Expect mud, rocks and roots on the trails, and some usually modest stream crossings. We will try to maintain appropriate distances from each other.
By registering for this hike, you agree to the following waiver of liability:
“I am aware of the risks inherent in outdoor activities. Therefore, I will be responsible for my own well-being while participating in the activities of the Mountain Club of Maryland, and while traveling to and from these activities. I agree that the Mountian Club of Meetup Group, its officers, representatives, and trip leaders are not liable individually or collectively for any injury, disease, sickness, loss, or damage to my person or property, direct or consequential, arising out of the activities of the Group. Neither I nor anyone in my household is currently in quarantine, is awaiting the results of a corona-virus test, or has a fever, or any flu-like symptoms.”
We'll have an optional trail-side brown bag lunch after the hike.
Come hike with us! It's good for your heart and good for your soul.
Please note that we do not wait for late-comers so please plan ahead.
