Background: Socially Responsible Investing refers to any investment strategy that aims to align financial performance with personal and social values. For a longtime SRI simply meant screening out certain securities from portfolios according to ethical considerations (e.g. no sin stocks!). Over the past decade, however, there has been an evolution in thinking. Today, SRI managers are now investing with an eye toward hastening the greater good by looking for companies that are good corporate citizens. Social considerations like product safety, resource management, pollution prevention and good corporate governance are becoming yardsticks to measure a company’s performance, alongside traditional financial metrics such as P/E ratios and sales growth. SRI is the fastest growing segment of the investment market today, and now accounts for over $6.5 trillion in investment assets in the U.S.
