Transitioning to Coding

Details

This is a continuation of the conversation that was started around how can adults transition to a programming job? (at the last Pyladies meetup "CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap")

We'll have a panel of 5 individuals(Katie, Piper, Kamilla, Kirk, and Cristina) who have transitioned to technical jobs through various routes - some learned on their own, and some went through bootcamps. Come learn about their transition, share yours, and participate is this great discussion.

###

About our speakers:

Piper is a platform developer and games enthusiast who started out as a business student.

Kamilla is currently working as a fullstack developer at Glamsquad. She enrolled at Fullstack Academy two years ago after spending three years doing international growth strategy for Indeed.

Katie currently works as a data scientist at the Office of the New York State Attorney General. Her office harnesses the power of data to advance social and economic justice for all New Yorkers. In her previous life, she worked as a senior project manager for the New York City Economic Development Corporation, spearheading Mayor De Blasio's $15 million "Made in NY" campaign to catalyze growth in local manufacturing throughout the five boroughs.

Kirk recently stopped being an international student (now is just run-of-the-mill international). Kirk used to be an English teacher before studying Environmental Engineering, and then transitioned to python development. He learned python through 100% free methods (a combination of free ebooks, online tutorials, blog posts, and lots and lots of googling).

Cristina joined Hightower a year ago as a fullstack software engineer working on the company's Angular/Rails application, but her first programming language was Python. She self-taught Python for a few years while pursuing a career in finance. When she decided to make the leap to developing software professionally, she attended Fullstack Academy's immersive program in NYC.
