What we're about

Meet other local Python developers, learners, employers, and enthusiasts of all kinds. All skill levels are welcome: if you are interested in Python, we are interested in you! Come along and expand your network of people, opportunities, and ideas.

We have great regular events:

Monthly presentation series: these are mid-length presentations (30 minutes to an hour) about topics of interest to the community. Sometimes we also have lightning talks (5-15 minutes). If you have something you'd like to share with everyone, drop a line to the organisers!

Monthly informal "Hands-on" evenings: these are a chance to sit down with other Python developers of all experience levels to push your project forward, get help with a particular trouble spot, share expertise, or do whatever else you like. These formally start at 6:30 (when the pizza arrives) but you can drift in from about 5:45. There will be a brief training session to kick things off each time. The training content will be aimed at the beginner level.

This meetup.com group is for the Auckland meetings.

With all those "p"-s, it must be a (virtual) Presentation Evening on Wed 19 Oct, 1800 for 1830 ~ 2030 NZDT (UTC+13).

Will you 'beam in' from overseas? Please be reminded that New Zealand is now operating one (more) hour earlier than the rest of the world, having moved to "Daylight Saving Time" ('Summer Time') - hence the "D" in NZDT.

Nathan Smith had an 'itch' caused by a problem related to the game of Scrabble. Like us all, he was self-motivated and thought 'this should be quite straightforward'. Like all of us found the 'progress' was sometimes a step forwards, and sometimes a brick-wall. Thus, data-structures related to words, dictionaries (of both definitions) and Directed Acyclic Word Graphs (DAWG), highlighting how they work (specialised networks and DAGs). How he personally struggled to understand the concepts, and even then, how frustrating it was until constructed his own.

A journey of challenges, a lesson of not giving in and hopefully a good story all round. Just as any and all of us face in our own lives as Python Developers. - but wait, there's more! He will recount a blind person's perspective on coding through the project, presenting overview information on the way a blind person may access code and what similarities or differences may crop up. Using this foundation to tie it into every day challenges we all face when coding, whether we're making a number generation game or the next AI that won't take over the world... Probably.

Creative Coding With Python: Learn how to code simple visuals in Python for games, innovative stats, simulations and generative art using a flavour of the processing library. This can be incredibly useful for teaching programming, visualising concepts and sharpening thinking skills.

Abdur-Rahman Janhangeer organises the Python Mauritius User Group and FlaskCon* (amongst many other contributions to the Python Community including graphic presentation libraries)

* in case you've not come-across it, Flask is a very popular web framework

Please RSVP for meeting URL.

The Auckland members of the New Zealand Python Users Group meet every month. You're very welcome to join us online. We are a healthy mix of Python users. Students, academics, hobbyists, industry professionals, and many completely new to Python.

During these meetups, we have two presentations by members of the group about their Python endeavours. At least one of the presentations should be aimed at a beginner level, so don't worry if you are not too familiar with Python. There is also content of-interest to Python-Masters and others who have been programming for many years.

The web-conference opens at 6:00pm, with a formal welcome at 6:30pm. Everything should be wrapped up by 8:30pm. See you there!

We are always on the look-out for subjects to cover at meetings; speakers willing to present, coach, and guide; and a suitable location for 'hybrid' meetings so that those who can, will be able to meet in-person.

We follow the NZPUG code of conduct to create an inclusive friendly environment. https://python.nz/Page/42341

Challenge-week 3: Generalising the solution

"Office Hours" style BBB web-conference with "dn" and others, starting at 1830 (and lasting for as long as there are interested-participants).

Ask questions, work on the challenge whilst others are 'around', or more generally 'talk Python'. (If you can't make this time, either request another mutually-convenient time for a BBB-call, or post a query through Meetup-messaging)

Explanation of how the Smart Iterator Challenge will work can be downloaded from https://mahu.rangi.cloud/SmartIteratorChallenge/Invitation.pdf

Coding Evening - Crafting Software

Online event

Come to our Coding Evening with your Python questions, suggestions, problems, etc; and/or bring a Lightning Talk about your current topic-of-interest - something new, a recent discovery, a contribution you have made...

We will continue the Crafting Software series. These are code-along-at-home exercises. The initial sessions are designed for Beginners, and will gradually 'grow' into areas which will challenge and benefit Journeyman Python Programmers and even Masters. The aim is to complement Olaf's Software Craftsmanship Presentation series with practical coding and observing the advantages of craftsmanship, as we/the code becomes more sophisticated.

You are welcome to bring a guest who knows (almost) nothing about Python - you will be able to explain things to them, as we go; and get them started with your favorite programming language.

If you were unable to attend last month, no problem. We will commence with a QuickStart to (re-)build the developments so-far.

Thereafter, we will continue to prototype an implementation of our 'toy' Business Rule, step-by-step learning a bit of Python and design ideas. Once we're confident, we'll transfer those into the Editor and form a working-script. If there's time, the future forays include "Get goin' with git", UX, and Looping. We'll forge-ahead and carry-over the rest into next month...

Please come, and come with a collegial frame-of-mind. Questions and conversation will be the order of the day. If you are more confident in Python, your constructive advice, suggestions, and alternate approaches will be valued ...

Please RSVP to be advised of the BBB URL, and to receive a copy of the QuickStart Guide.

During these meetups, we have two presentations by members of the group about their Python endeavours. At least one of the presentations should be aimed at a beginner level, so don't worry if you are not too familiar with Python.

The "room" opens at 6:30pm, and the first presentation starts at 6:45pm. Everything should be wrapped up by 8:30pm. See you there!

If you would like to present at a future meetup, fill out this google form and we will schedule you in https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc9EknPmnQP4SsXE4_JkDttmnh5ZbOM-A2vrNpy_0qnqnmd4g/viewform?usp=sf_link
