Sunday Afternoon at the Hike Inn - Peak Fall Color

Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge

It's time again for the popular Hike Inn trek. It's relatively close, not especially strenuous and always an enjoyable time. The timing is such that we can sleep a little later but still be back in time for dinner plans The location is less than an hour from Cumming and there are no gravel roads involved. The trail is blazed and easy to follow and there are no water crossings. Overall, if you want to sample backcountry hiking, this is a good place to start. However, this is not to say that it doesn't require a decent level of conditioning. We welcome those new to the group, but note that no-shows don't fly around here. We'll be starting at the top of Amicalola Falls and then heading out on the AT Approach trail to the junction with the Hike Inn trail, where we'll turn and go to the Hike Inn. There we'll have a snack and check out a great view on the back courtyard. Homemade snacks are available for a donation if you don't want to bring food. You can also refill water here, so you don't need to carry as much as much as you normally would. Next, we'll loop back to the Falls on a different and slightly easier trail. Once we are back, we'll view the highest waterfall in Georgia. Distance: 10 miles Elevation gain: 2200' Pace: moderate Carpool: if you are comfortable doing so, contact someone you know, and would be comfortable riding with, and set-up a rideshare. Brasstown Bald - OMG

Track Rock Gap Petroglyph Site

Every time there is a full moon, it rises about 20 minutes after the sun sets. While this occurs once every 28 days, it takes place on a Saturday only once or twice a year. For it to happen on a Saturday and also be Halloweeen is really rare. For that Halloween Saturday to be the second full moon in the month is once in a blue moon and most likely, once in a lifetime. Let's not forget that peak Fall color will be on display as well. If that's not enough for you, when you get home, you can turn your clocks back one hour. Given the rarity of this celestial spectacle, it only makes sense to do it in the best place possible, and that is Brasstown Bald. With its 360° view at the top, you are guaranteed an optimal view of what's happening in the sky. Being at the highest point in Georgia doesn't hurt either. Bottom line, this is the best of the rarest. It's a strenuous hike, so if you sign up but haven't hiked with us before, expect to be questioned about your hiking experience. If you aren't able to join us, I suggest you at least drive up to see it (but it won't be free like it is for us.) I'm going to allow an extra 30 minutes for those in the front to go off trail to see a cool bonus view. This will allow those who are a little behind to catch up. Once we reach the peak, we'll settle in to watch the sunset. As the afterglow begins to dim, we'll face the other direction and watch the moon come up. We'll then watch the cities some alive in the dark and then we'll be ready begin our descent under the light of a full moon (you'll still need a supplemental light source though.) Please do not use the RSVP as a placeholder or save-the-date reminder. Wait until your Halloween plans are sorted out and sign-up only once you know it's certain you'll be able to make it. Due to a larger group size and the surging Covid situation, let's ensure that we maintain 6' bubbles at all times. RT Distance - 12 miles Elevation Gain - 3800' No organized carpool, but if you are comfortable doing so, contact someone you know, and would be comfortable riding with, and set-up a rideshare. Notes: Sunset is at 6:45 Please observe all CDC guidelines for activity during the pandemic no parking charge dogs welcome Participate at your own risk, HGA assumes no liability for meetup events
