Visit Morning View Heritage Area - change of date and location for May’s Meeting
PLEASE NOTE – we have an exciting General Membership Meeting program this month, but there is a change to the normal date and location for May’s program. Normally our General Membership Meetings are on the 4th Mondays of the month, at PeeWee’s Place in Crescent Springs. Because Memorial Day is the 4th Monday of May, we’re moving the meeting to the 3rd Monday, May 21. And . . . the program for May will be a field trip to the beautiful Morning View Heritage Area in Southeastern Kenton County, near the Licking River. This new 213-acre nature preserve is just west of the Licking River. Find more info in NKY Group’s online Tri-State Hiking Guide: www.sierraclub.org/cumberland/northern-kentucky/tristate-hiking-guide. The Outings team of the Northern KY Sierra Club has been engaged in trail building at Morning View Heritage Area for almost two years. Our Group has already created over 60% (1.3 miles) of the current total trail distance (2.1 miles). For our program on May 21, we will hike the original short loop trail (Dickerson), which was created before our involvement. This trail, in combination with the Wetlands trail, is less than 1 mile and involves only 1 gradual shorter climb, including some nice vistas. We can also see some of the new trail work our Group has been doing. Come out and join old friends and new to experience a beautiful corner of Northern Kentucky! Wear shoes with soles for hiking on paths which are sometimes rocky, grassy or plain dirt and often not level or smooth. The hiking will take at least a half hour but our trek will last longer because we will pause often to chat or rest. You may wish to bring your camera, some water, a light trail snack, a walking stick and insect repellent. The address is 15168 Decoursey Pike, Morning View, KY 41063. Decoursey Pike is also KY Route 177. The Heritage Area is about ½ mile south on Decoursey Pike from the KY-14 intersection where the Morning View Post Office is. There are no road signs yet, but look for a gravel parking lot with 2 entrances on the WEST side of Decoursey Pike. Enter the lot and park facing a wood fence with a restored black barn behind it. Please be aware that many GPS maps list the exact location of 15168 Decoursey Pike as on the east side of the road, which is slightly wrong. As noted, the gravel parking lot is on the WEST side of Decoursey Pike, on the opposite side of the road from the railroad tracks and the Licking River. As always . . . carpooling is encouraged.

What we're about

We are a group of ordinary folks in Northern Kentucky interested in the outdoors and in protecting the environment. We offer hikes, trail maintenance work in local parks, interesting presentations on regional environmental topics, book clubs, local food events, environmental activism and good old fun with other outdoor, environmental people. We're happy that you're interested in our Group. We are a part of the national Sierra Club, and of the Cumberland Chapter of the Sierra Club in Kentucky. Check back here regularly. We will be posting new events all the time!
