What do children understand? Having difficult conversations with children
This meetup will led by Carys Seeley, a PhD student in the UEA School of Psychology. Carys will lead a discussion on her thesis topic - how children understand death, and how we talk to children about it. However, this topic is really an example of research into children's development of conceptual understanding. The kinds of questions we will discuss include: what aspects of death do children understand; how would you approach the topic of death with a child; and, what influence do we think parents have on children's thinking about death?

What we're about

This is a group for anyone with an interest in psychology. You definitely do not need to be a Psychologist to join this group! The plan is for a regular Meetup in Norwich, either for a drink, dinner or psychology oriented event. I'm looking forward to meeting like-minded people interested in personal development for fun chats on how to "strive wisely" and be more "open, aware, and active".

Primarily we're a social group for people interested in other people and who want some stimulating and enjoyable adult company. Everyone I've met so far is friendly, intellectually curious and non-judgemental. The psychology bit is secondary and I (or another discussion organiser) just post some background topic material for people to give the conversations some focus. Reading this material is optional for the Meetups but some people find it interesting and gives them a better understanding of new psychological domains. Other people draw on their own personal experiences, people watching and intuition skills to inform their discussions. All approaches are welcome and encouraged.

My own view is that the study of psychology can be a means to understanding how to live a better life. If people learn something or think differently as a result of our discussions that's great and if it simply gets people out of the house for an evening that's great too. So feel free to join us one evening and try us out!

One thing to add, if you receive any unsolicited emails from anyone advertising their books or anything else, please let me know. I'm happy for people to promote their practice, but if you want to do this, please discuss with the organisers first.
