OSM GeoWeek Saturday Mapternoon
Details
To finish out OSM GeoWeek (http://osmgeoweek.org/) I thought we could do a relaxing, come and go as you please, mapathon for Puerto Rico. I (Russ) am one of the co-leads for the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Activation for the seven natural disasters (https://www.hotosm.org/projects/hot_activates_for_multiple_disasters_hurricane_irma_and_maria_mexico_earthquakes_and) we have responded to. My top priority is providing the best building dataset for Puerto Rico that we can.
The most difficult part of these responses is finishing what we call "validation", that is a step built into our workflow where a second mapper looks over and 'verifies' that the mapping was done well. As of today, Nov. 3rd, we are still less than 50% done with validation in Puerto Rico and as time passes, less people are interested and/or some other project takes their attention.
Come by Caution West on Saturday November 18th and have a beer (or not) and I can show you the typical validation workflow, tips and tricks to identify and correct new mapper mistakes; and potentially, you can help both correct critical data for Puerto Rico's recovery, and help a new mapper, or several, become great contributors to OSM.
I'll be there from about 1PM to at least 3PM, but depending on who shows up we could be there a few more hours. Bring a laptop and mouse if you want to validate; also I usually do validation with JOSM, so you'll want to install Java, etc. ahead of time to get the most out of it.
Happy Mapping and Happy OSM GeoWeek!
