Humanitarian engineering is the creation of technologies geared toward helping people in need.

The Ohio State University's College of Engineering has a long history in developing projects and organizations with a humanitarian focus dating back over 35 years. This focus culminated in 2014 with the creation of the Humanitarian Engineering Center (https://osuhe.engineering.osu.edu).

The program offerings are wide ranging, from a Minor in Humanitarian Engineering, to Domestic Projects (we were introduced to Professor Betty Lise Anderson’s STEM outreach efforts in January), to numerous International Projects.

For the first ECE MeetUp of the fall semester, we join ECE Professor Kevin Passino, Director of the Humanitarian Engineering Center and Student participants, as they provide an overview of the Center, its history and projects.

The offerings of this program to students are numerous and its impact across the globe is apparent. Ohio State is building quite a reputation in the field of Humanitarian Engineering and graduates are being well prepared to meet the challenges that face the world with the background they are receiving through the Center. Maybe there is even a way for us Alumni to assist.
