What we're about

Welcome to OUTdoors KC - the LGBT+, their friends and family adventuring club of Kansas City. Join us for hiking, paddling, backpacking and more.

OUTdoors KC is a judgement-free Meetup open to all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels. Even though we are originally an LGBT group, friends and allies are more than welcomed. Diversity in all areas, experience level, gender, age, race, all may participate. If you have a four-legged friend you would like to bring along feel free, provided they're under your control and it is not otherwise noted in the event’s description.

Adventuring with us starts with you, and probably the most exciting part about our group is that our outings are just as diverse as our members. Whether it’s leisurely day hikes around town, paddling the Muddy Mo, or multi-night backpacks in the Ozark Mountains we strive to maintain an active year-round calendar. Many of our events will have food and museum add-ons. If you have an idea for an event feel free to make a suggestion in the discussions section.

A minimal fee is collected to cover the annual fees charged to operate of $197. Our outings are planned with thought. Your safety is important, itineraries will be followed set by the event organizers. *Being prepared is the key to enjoying the great outdoors.

First Annual Rachel Carson Memorial hike

Needs a location

Let's meetup after work to start the weekend off right with our first annual Rachel Carson hike. This pioneer of the modern-day environmental movement should be celebrated not only by LGBT+ people but everyone. We would have lost many species of animals by now without her courage to reveal the truth about DDT. The release of her book Silent Spring in 1962 was groundbreaking and very controversial. Having to fight big cooperate companies that touted their "safe" killing sprays. Please do your own research about this fascinating woman and a member of our community. The 27th of May was her birthday. :-)

We will enjoy this hike on a trail that was also important in the creation of Kansas City's trail system. The Eddy Ballentine Trail in south KC. We'll hike about 3 miles. The parking isn't great but the trails are. The sun sets just as we are finishing! Looking forward.

DO please bring a dollar donation to pay for the annual $197 Meetup fees. Thank you.

North Fork

Needs a location

Let's Meetup again (our second float of 2022) to float the North Fork River but this time in early June. This is generally a mild river ok for beginners. We will make our base the Pettit's Canoe rental. https://pettitscanoerental.wixsite.com/home This isn't a fancy place, free camping with rental if I recall and basic sleeper cabins and clean bath and shower rooms. Really nice folks. Everyone will be required to make their own reservations, but we can work together to share space as well. We have already reserved the cabin with a kitchen and will be our evenings place to gather for a campfire.
Equipment such as dry bags are highly recommended. Extra dry clothing, rain gear, water. These items are a must. There are motels fairly close,,, 20 min. Antler Motel.
Afraid to say this but dogs probably should be left at home and your kids, 21 yrs of age to attend.

ARRIVE Saturday for lovely dinner time with fun people and a swim. Sunday we float. DEPART on Monday OR…some may choose a second day of floating, or other adventures.

THE FLOAT: Pineville to Noel (8 miles, about 6 to 8 hours) Their most popular float with many gravel bars and swimming holes. Nice, easy float with time to relax and enjoy a day on the Elk River and still be back in time for dinner. Kayaks, canoes, and raft are available to rent. OPTION to float one or both days. More about the Elk River here: http://southwestpaddler.com/docs/elkmo2.html

THE STAY: Shady Beach has two sites, one in Pineville (Shady Beach Floats) which is the put-in at the Hwy 71 Bridge. Their location in Noel is Shady Beach Camping, which is their take-out at the Mt Shira Access. Both have options for camping and cabins. Shady Beach Camping (Noel) has RV spaces available. The Pineville site (Shady Beach Floats) has one BIG cabin—that is our base/gathering place for social and campfire time.
