Richard Powers leads Halloween Night at Friday Night Waltz - October 31
friday night waltz, 625 hamilton, palo alto, CA, USThis is the first time that Halloween has been on a Friday in 11 years! (You can check out the calendars yourself. And Richard led the Halloween FNW that last time, in 2014.)
Feel free to come in costume or Halloween colors (or black always works).
Richard Powers and Tracey teach classes from 7:15 to 9 pm.
7:15 - The centennial of a mystery step from the very first werewolf film, Wolf Blood, a 1925 silent film that had a dance party scene. This step truly is a mystery, because we don't know what the step was called, and Richard has never seen it described in any dance manual. But we have two different 1925 films of this step, and you can dance it tonight during a spooky one-step or polka.
7:45 - Tricks that are Treats with Cross-Step Waltz. Come play with some of the latest innovations in cross-step waltz. Richard will first teach cross-step waltz basics for beginners, then some new variations that are tricks that are also a treat, like a surprise Inside Turn Free Spin from Lead's Cradle. And Cross-Step Mazurka is easier than you would suspect. Richard taught some of these at out-of-town waltz weekends in the past two months, and now he is bringing them home to FNW.
Both classes are beginner-friendly, with no prior experience necessary, but experienced dancers will find plenty to love as well.
9 pm - Halloween Dance Party including a lot of spooky but very danceable music that you're never heard before! Waltz, swing, Zombie Line Dance, tango, cross-step waltz, bachata, West Coast Swing, Accelerating Polka, cha-cha, Congress of Vienna, BNP, salsa, Tokyo Polka, Lindy, NC2S, hustle, and more!
For those who don't know about Richard Powers, he is one of the world's foremost experts in social dance. He has taught dance in Paris, London, Rome, Venice, Prague, Vienna, Verona, Geneva, Seville, Edinburgh, Krakow, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tokyo and Kyoto, including 34 workshops in France (teaching in French) and 28 in Japan (teaching in Japanese). Richard is currently the full-time social dance instructor at Stanford University.
