Artificial Intelligence - could a machine be conscious, what would that mean?

This has been debated since the first mechanical automata in the 1800s but it is becoming increasingly possible for a machine to emulate human behaviour.

At what point can we call this consciousness? Could that ever be possible?

If the answer is "yes" to either of these, we really do have to understand what that means for humanity.
