Today, I'm the Head of Product at Messente, where I'm focused on helping businesses in Europe connect with their customers through next-generation messaging tools like SMS, WhatsApp, and Viber. As a University of Bath alumnus who still lives nearby, I'm excited to be part of the local tech community.

There’s a lot to it - these models can cover the whole lifecycle, encompassing aspects of organisation design, tech, ways of working, planning, design, delivery and operations, all intended to promote flow and use time and talent wisely.

Effective Product Operating Models are tailored to an organisation’s situation and aspirations, and that’s where things get tricky, there isn’t a template or turn key solution. Success isn’t only about how good the model is (or could be) it’s about introducing it, adapting it and the perennial challenges of change.

Based on experience coaching leads and working alongside product teams this primer covers the Why, What and How. We’ll delve into:
- Why use a product operating model?
- What makes a good model, what is (and isn’t) in it.
- How to introduce and evolve the model.

John Clapham is an experienced digital team and leadership coach, helping leaders think clearly, use time wisely, and achieve their goals. He works with organisations to develop systems and behaviors enabling them to be more effective, productive and enjoyable to work in.
He brings broad experience ranging from start-up to enterprise scale, formed in the publishing, telecommunications, finance, defence and public sector arenas. His focus is towards lasting change and performance and he’s employed DevOps, Continuous Delivery, Lean, Agile, Kanban, Scrum and most things in between.
Based in the fine city of Bristol he likes to build and fix things, is a keen ultralight hiker and occasional orienteer. When he thinks no one is looking he’s prone to grabbing a rucksack and disappearing into the wilds of Dartmoor.
