    PyDataMCR March Talks

    THE TALKS

Garbage Semantics In, Garbage AI Out - Hurma Ehtesham (she/her)

Most conversations about AI focus on models, algorithms, and compute power. In reality, many AI projects fail for a much simpler reason: the underlying data does not mean the same thing to everyone.

In this talk, I will explore how inconsistent definitions, messy business processes, and ambiguous data structures quietly undermine AI systems. Using real examples from industry, I will show how problems in data semantics propagate into analytics and machine learning models, producing results that appear sophisticated but are fundamentally unreliable.

The session will highlight practical steps data teams can take to align definitions, improve data structures, and ensure that AI systems are built on foundations that actually make sense.

Hurma Ehtesham is a Data and Systems Analyst at Civic Engineers in Manchester, where she works on building data platforms, dashboards, and automation systems that help organisations make better operational decisions. Her work focuses on translating messy real-world data into structured systems that people across an organisation can actually use. She also writes about AI, data governance, and the practical challenges of implementing AI in industry.

Mapping the PyData Community - Hugh Evans (he/him)

In this talk I'll be walking through my project building maps of the PyData community using data scraped from Meetup. Featuring fun data preparation, geoencoding. map making with Folium, and a call to support your local PyData group.

I'm a Senior Developer Advocate at Aiven where I help to take care of our Kafka and ClickHouse communities.

Out of office hours I organise AI Signals, a community which hosts talks on real world applications of AI. I'm also a regular volunteer and organiser at PyData London.

I'm a former apprentice and an advocate for vocational learning as a pathway into an IT career

    LOCATION
We'll be at Krakenflex, who are also kindly supplying catering. The capacity is limited to 90.

After the talks we'll all head somewhere local for some post-event socialising.
