About us

Raleigh Dragon Boat Club was first formed in 2011 and received its 501(c)3 non-profit status in 2017. The club cultivates an arena for dragon boat paddling in the Triangle. A dragon boat is a human-powered watercraft that typically boasts a crew of 20 paddlers, one drummer and a steersperson. Our “Intro Practice” paddling sessions on Saturdays provide an opportunity for the public to come learn what dragon boating is and how to paddle. The home of our dragon boat is Lake Wheeler Park, where we hold practice and provide free coaching and all of the equipment needed. Being entirely volunteer-driven, we are a non-profit organization fueled by our passion for paddling. Every September, we are the premier club for the Greater Triangle Dragon Boat Festival taking place in Cary, NC. We have teams for everyone.

Membership in our competitive team, Raleigh Relentless, continues to be open to any level of experience and fitness.  Weekly, we focus on improving our individual techniques and fitness to keep in sync as a team.

Raleigh Dragon Boat Club is proud to host Chemo-Kaze team. Born in 2018 from one local breast cancer survivor’s dream, we set out to create a team of paddlers committed to inner and outer strength, while spreading joy and having fun. The Kazes continue to welcome THRIVERS of any cancers, organ transplants or other illnesses, along with the family and friends that support them.

Together, Relentless and Chemo-Kazes travel to a handful of races in the southeast as competitive teams, creating unforgettable memories along the way. Through fortitude and fellowship, all our paddlers grow stronger together.

We offer 3 free-practices before we ask you permanently join the club.
If you'd like to permanently join our club, please go to our website and pay the membership fee on the website.

Introduction to Dragon Boat Paddling, $5 donation required

Lake Wheeler Park, 6404 Lake Wheeler Rd, Raleigh, NC, US

Come join us for an introduction to Dragon Boat Paddling! A Mandatory $5 donation is required, through our club's website. (details below). A dragon boat is a 20 person boat with an additional person standing at the back of the boat steering while the 20 people paddle in sync to swiftly move the boat through the water! (go under photos here to see close up pictures) Raleigh Dragon Boat Club (RDBC) is a local, fully- volunteer-run non profit club that has been paddling out at Lake Wheeler for the past 12 years. It is such a fun work out on the beautiful lake in a social atmosphere, paddling together to move the boat!

We will provide paddle, life vest, and coaching instruction. This year, we are asking for a $5 donation to cover the costs of the wear and tear on our boats/paddles/life vests. (non refundable) .Please bring a water bottle, wear a hat and water friendly clothes/shoes--you may get splashed as you learn the paddle stroke :-) . No perfumes are allowed. No Guests, only adults who are registered here on Meet Up Please. We have a dry bag for everyone's car keys, but there is no room on the boat for everyone to bring a personal bag, so please lock up/hide your bag in your car. Please arrive 15 min early so we can provide you with the correct paddle size and a life vest, or bring your own life vest if you have one. You will receive paddle stroke instruction from one of our veteran members before we launch. We also have a warm up before we launch and stretch-down after the practice. All paddlers are needed to help bring the boat down to the docks on the dolly and bring it back up to the storage area at end of practice.

Its such a fun time out on the lake, we hope you can join us!
