What we're about

Do you live in Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, maybe Hermosa Beach? Do you like reading great books and socializing with smart, plugged-in fellow readers? Then you're in the right place!

When I moved to the South Bay five years ago, I looked for a good book club with little luck. I work in publishing and I was sure there were fellow readers around here. It can't ALWAYS be surfing and volleyball, can it??
After starting the Redondo Beach Book Club, I realized there are! Now in its seventh year, the Redondo Beach Book Club meets at least once monthly and reads a variety of books voted in by the members (both fiction and nonfiction). There's no age minimum or maximum, but it's turning out to be mostly women - which we like. Of course, you must be 21+ to drink wine...so there's that.

If you'd like to attend a meetup, join the wait list and read the book. Most of the wait list usually gets in by the time the meeting happens. Please note, however, that we're strict about the No Show Policy (copied at the bottom of each meetup description).
Now, let's get reading! :)

Upcoming events (4+)

June: "Exhalation" by Ted Chiang

Needs a location

WHAT WE'RE READING:
We'll pick the book for June during the April book club. In the meantime, RSVP to save your place!

HOUSEKEEPING:
If you RSVP "Going" and your plans change, please try to update your response at least seven days in advance.

NO SHOW POLICY:
In April 2019, a new NO SHOW POLICY was put into place to help ensure people on the waitlist can get into each meeting with enough time to read the book while also weeding out flakey flakers who reserve a seat but don't use it. The new NO SHOW POLICY is in two parts:

(1) If you RSVP 'Going' and cancel your RSVP within seven days of book club WITHOUT EXPLANATION, you'll be immediately removed from the group.

(2) If you RSVP 'Going' and cancel your RSVP within seven days of book club with explanation, but for any reason, you'll be marked a 'No Show.' If you rack up three 'No Shows," you'll be removed from the group.

WHAT WE'RE READING:
So far we have read about 3/4 of SWANN'S WAY---we've completed "Overture," "Combray: Parts I & II," and the first half of "Swann In Love." If you're not there yet, you have an extra week to catch up this month!

For our fourth book discussion, this month we will read the final section of SWANN'S WAY, completing "Swann In Love," from chapter 100 to the end, and continuing to finish the "Place Names" section as well.

The events for this group will be online.

Bonus Discussion (Online): "Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband?"

Link visible for attendees

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Meet Yinka: a thirty-something, Oxford-educated, British Nigerian woman with a well-paid job, good friends, and a mother whose constant refrain is "Yinka, where is your huzband?"

Yinka's Nigerian aunties frequently pray for her delivery from singledom, her work friends think she's too traditional (she's saving herself for marriage!), her girlfriends think she needs to get over her ex already, and the men in her life...well, that's a whole other story. But Yinka herself has always believed that true love will find her when the time is right.
Still, when her cousin gets engaged, Yinka commences Operation Find-A-Date for Rachel's Wedding. Aided by a spreadsheet and her best friend, Yinka is determined to succeed. Will Yinka find herself a huzband? And what if the thing she really needs to find is herself?

Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? brilliantly subverts the traditional romantic comedy with an unconventional heroine who bravely asks the questions we all have about love. Wry, acerbic, moving, this is a love story that makes you smile but also makes you think--and explores what it means to find your way between two cultures, both of which are yours.
