What we're about

Rockland Poets hosts poetry slams, workshops, open mics, and other poetry events in Rockland County NY, in New York's Lower Hudson Valley.

We are dedicated to providing an outlet for people to create, share, and listen to poetry. We currently have an in-person poetry slam on the first Saturday of each month in Nyack NY, and have been hosting online workshops on Sunday, Thursday and Friday, in addition to online Open Mics over Zoom.

What is a poetry slam? A poetry slam is a performance poetry competition judged by the audience. Where traditional poetry readings are about supporting the poet, poetry slams focus on the interaction between audience and poet. Strong writing and strong delivery are both important. Whether you want to come out and participate by performing or by spectating, you are welcome. We've been putting on events since March 2011.

Poets Process Jam

Link visible for attendees

Welcome to the Poets' Process Jam! We are here to develop ourselves, our community, and to meet the challenges of performance, publishing, and self-set goals. This group meets for one hour. This meeting is for anyone who will benefit from a timeblock dedicated to editing, organizing, and submitting their craft.

The Jam will be conducted in two rooms. Everyone can pick their room. One will be a social jam. The second will be run in a 'Shut up and Write' format. In that room we'll go around, say what we're working on, and what we'd like to accomplish today, and get to it.

Guidelines:

Share opportunities that aren’t right for you.

Keep a single place for your verse, and type up your best.

Create a way to review your work from this month, and as a collection.

Integrate any strong new work.

Bring us your good news!

“Levels of Speech/Iridescent Poetry/(Un)Spoken Dimension Spikes.”

Do you want your words to be understood clearly, or would you rather be received as an ethereal, otherworldly being made of poetry itself? Does your answer change from poem-to-poem, from stanza-to-stanza, sentence-to-sentence, or word-to-word? In this workshop, we will locate the invisible poetry dials throughout our writing, and experiment with adjusting them to yield all sorts of interesting results.

This space is used as a yoga and dance studio. The venue does not allow shoes on the floor, so be prepared to take yours off when you arrive.

The workshop is an hour and a half long; we'll be starting pretty promptly at 5 PM.

Registration is $25 general; $20 for students, seniors, and anyone who can't afford $25 right now. If you are interested in attending but are experiencing serious financial hardship, contact us, and we'll figure out how we can make it work.

Attendance is limited, so register ahead of time.

Our workshop facilitator is Anthony McPherson. Anthony McPherson is a biracial-Black poet, dancer and artist from Oklahoma, based in Harlem. His work appears on Button Poetry, Write About Now, SlamFind, Huffington Post, Upworthy, The Good Men Project and elsewhere. Poems also appear in the Emmy-winning documentary “Frameworks,” and “Love Beats Rhymes” by Lionsgate Films. McPherson is a Rustbelt Poetry Slam Champion, a two-time Inkslam Champion, a three-time Brooklyn Poetry Slam Champion and placed runner-up at the Individual World Poetry Slam. Currently a poet-in-residence with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, McPherson is represented by The College Agency.

Masks are optional.
