Abstract:
Product Managers are now as in-demand in the tech sector as software engineers once were, and they now command among the highest salaries (https://hired.com/state-of-salaries-2017) in U.S. technology companies. These specialists who shepherd new products and releases to market are often called the CEOs of products and services. But finding good PMs – those with excellent technical chops, interpersonal skills and business acumen – can be beyond challenging. And according to Burning Glass Technologies, more than 250,000 positions were open in the last year for hybrid jobs – occupations requiring a combination of programming skills and skills commonly found in design, data analysis, and marketing.
Two Deans from Carnegie Mellon Univeristy — Bob Dammon, dean of the Tepper School of Business and Andrew Moore, dean of the School of Computer Science, will be at THE HIVE for a Think Tank event on Thursday, July 6, starting at 6pm to discuss the power of these two schools coming together to collaboratively educate a new breed of Product Managers.
A new 12-month master’s degree program at Carnegie Mellon University – a Master of Science in Product Management (MSPM) – aims to help fill the need for product managers by teaching computer scientists and engineers how to become expert product managers.
Launching in January 2018 at CMU’s Pittsburgh campus, the 12-month master’s program will provide both the technical skills and business acumen students need to be successful in this high-demand area, including a required internship and capstone project to inject the practical skills needed.
Hiring qualified product managers is extremely important to a business as they help drive all aspects of a product, from development, to quality assurance and testing, to training, pricing, sales and more. Finding experienced product managers is hard, and training from within an organization can be even more difficult. CMU’s MSPM program will help technical professionals leap from technologist to strategic product manager, and give them the skills they need to get a product from concept to customer.

About Robert Dammon:
Robert (Bob) Dammon is the ninth dean of the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, a post that he assumed in May 2011 and to which he was reappointed in 2016. A researcher and professor of financial economics, he joined the faculty in 1984 and was appointed to serve as the school’s associate dean for education from 2008 to 2011. Professor Dammon earned his BS in Economics and Business from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse (1979) and his MBA (1980) and PhD (1984) in Financial Economics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
Professor Dammon’s research studies the impact of taxes on the pricing of financial securities, the financial policies of corporations, and the lifetime savings and investment decisions of individuals. His research has been published in the most prestigious professional journals in finance and economics, including the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, and the American Economic Review. He has received numerous awards for his research contributions, including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Writing on Lifelong Financial Security in 2004.
Professor Dammon has developed and taught courses in corporate finance, corporate restructuring, and business valuation to both MBA students and corporate executives from around the world. He is a three-time recipient of the George Leland Bach Teaching Award for Excellence in the Classroom at the Tepper School of Business, co-recipient of the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award at the Fuqua School of Business, and a two-time recipient of the Four-Star Faculty Award from BusinessWeek.
About Andrew Moore:
Andrew W. Moore, a distinguished computer scientist with expertise in machine learning and robotics, became dean of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science in August 2014. He had previously served as a professor of computer science and robotics before taking a leave of absence to become founding director of Google’s Pittsburgh engineering office in 2006. Moore’s research interests broadly encompass the field of “big data”—applying statistical methods and mathematical formulas to massive quantities of information, ranging from Web searches to astronomy to medical records, in order to identify patterns and extract meaning from that information. His past research has also included improving the ability of robots and other automated systems to sense the world around them and respond appropriately. At Google Pittsburgh, Moore led the office as it grew to hundreds of employees. In 2011, he became vice president of engineering for Google Commerce. Moore led essential engineering contributions to Google’s services, including AdWords, Shopping and Search, as well as core Google engineering infrastructure and tools. Moore received a doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 1991 and joined the CMU faculty in 1993 following two years of post-doctoral research. In 2005, he was elected a fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. Andrew lives in Pittsburgh with his wife, Mary, and two children, William and Lucy.
