SF Sketchers will be 5 years old, and we're having a birthday party at Arch Art Supplies, with a sketching meetup beforehand at nearby Mission Creek.
Part 1: The quiet waterway of Mission Creek sits in the heart of one of the most rapidly changing parts of the city, with dense condos rising on the north and the Mission Bay complex forming a city-within-a-city to the south. But houseboats and egrets still live in the channel, and a lovely park lines the shore.
Part 2: Arch has signed on to be the official sponsor of SF Sketchers, and this birthday party is the start of what should be a beautiful friendship. There will be food and drink, toasts, and a preview of Bay Area sketching classes and events coming up in 2017.
We'll also be launching the Bay Area 10x10 series (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0pkFS9o5s1oNWlfRk9BYWNYZTA/view): 10 sketching classes to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Urban Sketchers (http://www.urbansketchers.org/) organization.
Plus, Arch is offering us a 10% discount on everything in the store during the party, a raffle prize, and a chance to check out some very cool sketching gear.
12:00 Meet by the tables on the south (sunny) side of the Mission Creek Park Pavilion. Come early if you want more sketching time—some of us will be in the area from 11:30. Call/text Laurie at (415)[masked] if you can't find us.
1:15 Meet back at the Pavilion for the walk over to Arch, or drive over to Arch and meet us there.
1:30 Party at Arch Art Supplies (http://www.archsupplies.com/index.html), 10 Carolina Street, just north of 15th Street. (See map below).
Arch (http://archsupplies.com/) has been open continuously since 1978 but lately has been dealing with the same forces of gentrification and displacement as the artists it has supported all those years. Since losing its lease two years ago it has hung on in a couple of small pop-up stores, but has finally managed to find a secure home. So we'll be celebrating the survival of one of San Francisco's last independent art supply stores as well as our survival as artists in this changing city.

Transit: MUNI's T-Third line runs through the heart of this area. and you can catch it from Embarcadero BART. From the Caltrain station it's a 7 minute walk to our starting point.
If you're going straight to Arch, catch the #19 bus from Civic Center BART or the 22 or 55 from 16th Street Mission station. Catch the 10 from Caltrain
Car: Because of the Giants' Fan Fest, there will probably not be much parking in the Mission Creek area. I recommend parking near Arch and walking back to Mission Creek (about a 12 minute walk from the store). Arch has some parking set aside for customers but if that's full, check along Hooper Street or cruise around the Potrero Hill area to the south. Some streets have 4-hour meters.
Bicycle: To Mission Creek, it's a nice ride from Embarcadero BART station along the waterfront past the ballpark and down the wide waterfront promenades on both sides of the channel. Near Arch, there are good bicycle lanes along Division, Townsend, 7th, 8th, 16th and 17th Streets.
- Warm jacket, hat and gloves (Get Daiso's $1.50 fleece gloves and cut off the fingertips.)
- A sketching stool will give you more options, but there are some benches.
- Bring money in case you'd like to take advantage of the 10% discount from Arch to buy some new sketching supplies. (No charge for the meetup.)
See sketches from our Mission Creek meetup in April 2015 (https://www.meetup.com/SF-Sketchers/photos/26042392/), when Ajay did this one.
