Get Smart on Container Orchestration Strategies

Details

IT Ops and DevOps teams are moving to container technology, like Docker, that promises app simplicity and portability between clouds. As production use of containers gains traction in the enterprise, users need next-generation management tools to help scale container-based applications. Determining a container orchestration strategy and solution can blow your ears back given the many options, including: Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, Docker Swarm, Apache Mesos, HashiCorp Nomad, and more.

In this Meetup, we’re tapping some experienced geeks to explain the pros and cons of the various solutions, and explore their sweet spots and best use cases. The objective is to get deep enough to help Meetup attendees make informed decisions about their container orchestration solution strategy.

Presenters:

  • Josh Wood, DocOps, CoreOS

  • Eric Sigler, Head of DevOps, PagerDuty

  • JT Giri, Co-founder & CEO, nClouds Inc.

Schedule:

6:30 - 7:00 pm - Socialize, free food & drinks.

7:00 - 8:00 pm - Presentations

8:00 - 8:30 pm - Panel discussion, Q&A

Did we mention the free food & drinks!

Kubernetes "the easy way" - Josh Wood, DocOps, CoreOS

This high-level introduction to Kubernetes will enumerate cluster scheduling and management concepts in the Kubernetes orchestrator, name the key API abstractions and resources, and illustrate Kubernetes as an intermediate API making the deployment of containerized apps uniform across infrastructure providers, allowing teams to leverage common patterns from the data center to cloud environments.

Stoke your apps with Amazon ECS and Jenkins - JT Giri, CEO & Co-founder, nClouds

ECS is a fully managed container platform from AWS. We’ll explore how ECS helps organizations modernize existing apps by leveraging built-in auto-healing and enhanced deployment capabilities. And, how you can combine Jenkins pipeline and ECS to deliver a unified experience to streamline your app lifecycle.

Our Incredible (Container) Journey: Adopting Docker at PagerDuty - Eric Sigler, Head of DevOps, PagerDuty

In this talk, we'll share how PagerDuty began adopting containers for application development, and the many trials and tribulations we faced along the way. We'll discuss Docker, Chef, Mesos, Nomad, and all of the various supporting technologies that go into a successful migration. Audience members will take away a variety of learning lessons and pitfalls to avoid, that they can apply at their own organizations.

Oh, and there’s free food and drinks!
