Talk 1 : Strategies for Building Web Services-Backed Rails Apps

Kris Gonzalez from ThoughtWorks will talk about techniques for building reliable web services-backed rails applications in an unreliable world. The presentation will focus on using libraries for doing TDD and CI as part of integrating with and using external web services – services which at times can be flaky and less than reliable.

About the Speaker

Kris is a ThoughtWorks Lead Developer with a background in web applications, mobile apps, and data-driven integration across many industries, including airline, retail, education, and media.

Tech Talk : V.me
William Chow, a Senior Engineer in Visa's Rails Group, will be in to talk about their V.me site and API-driven service and the benefits and challenges of working with Ruby on Rails in large-scale apps and connecting to sophisticated back-ends.

Talk 2 : Imaging with RMagick
Song Zheng from Tokbox will talk about image processing with RMagick and ImageMagick within a Rails app. He'll provide a detail view of what image libraries can do for you as well as share architectural solutions for offloading the task processing so the work happens asynchronously, in the background, and at scale.

About the Speaker

Song Zheng is a Developer Evangelist at Tokbox, a leading video chat platform that provides voice and video messaging in the browser without the need for a plug-in. In three years, Song has gone from having no coding experience to winning a Facebook Hackathon and teaching a programming course at UCLA.
