WELCOME to the Southeastern Photographic Society Meetup page.
Click here to join or renew your SPS membership. Note: Signing up on the SPS Meetup page does not make you an SPS member. SPS members pay dues to engage in many activities that are unavailable to guests who simply sign up on the SPS MeetUp page.
Click here to go to the SPS website where you will find everything you need to know about us.
The Southeastern Photographic Society (SPS) is a registered non-profit Atlanta-based community of photographers established in 1976 to help members learn the skills for creating great images and sharing them with others.
We use Meetup to announce all of our events, so please look below to see what is coming up.
Thanks for visiting us here on Meetup.

To RSVP for this Event, use the link above.Sloss Furnaces is a National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, Alabama. It operated as a pig iron-producing blast furnace from 1882 to 1971. After closing, it became one of the first industrial sites (and the only blast furnace) in the U.S. to be preserved and restored for public use. In 1981, the furnaces were designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior. For more information on what is available to photograph, check out their website: https://www.slossfurnaces.com.
We'll meet in the parking lot at 10 AM and enter as a group. I'll sign the registration for the group. There isn't a charge to enter but they do request a donation.
Once inside, you can explore with the group or on your own.
**Communication with participants will be through the list generated from the link above and will include information about schedule and plan changes, weather updates, link to the SmugMug site to post your photos, etc. We will not be communicating using RSVPs through the Meetup Site.**

SPS has three standing meetings each month for its members and guests.
The First Friday Program and Competition features an outside speaker and a members' image competition. While competition entries at these monthly meetings are restricted to currently paid-up members, we ALWAYS welcome visitors interested in photography to attend.
The Learnshops (fourth Tuesdays) and Coffee & Critique (second Saturdays) are intended for members, but again, we welcome visitors.
If you attend regularly, we ask that you help support the club (which pays for the rental of the facilities, supplies, and equipment) by becoming a member!

Please join us for our June First Friday meeting featuring a long time friend of SPS, fine art photographer Mark Alberhasky, and enter our print image competition, “People/Portraits” (more information below.)
Mark says: “Photographers are inherently technically driven creatives, yet the process for making fine, powerful images is paradoxically critically dependent on non-technical artistry. This presentation shares decades of personal experience and the recognition of what, in my hands, has made the most difference in producing photographs of substance in my work.”
Photographer, physician, author and inventor, Mark’s photographic experience spans more than 50 years. In 2004, Mark became a contributing photographer for Nikon. His work has won awards internationally with placements as diverse as commercial ads, product packaging, magazine covers, textbooks, and action sports publications. Mark taught as a Nikon mentor for the Popular Photography magazine Mentor Series Worldwide Treks for 15 years. He now teaches privately in his Atlanta home studio and leads trips for private clients.

The Shady Dale Rodeo is presented in an outdoor arena that is very photo friendly. A full range of events makes for great shooting.
Parking is free and adult tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at the gate. The Rodeo starts at 8pm. We will meet up in the parking lot at 6pm to find our way around, but feel free to arrive earlier in the day.
During the day on Saturday, from 9am to 4pm, Shady Dale’s Rodeo Roundup Festival will entertain rodeo fans with music, venders and eats with the mile long Al Sihah Shrine parade which starts at 3pm.
There are many good animal and people pictures before the show. We will have pretty good natural light for the first couple of events, with decent lighting later. A fast medium range telephoto works best for the action.
We will have access to a buffer area. They ask that we show a little common courtesy and move around frequently and not stand in front of the people in the crowd for too long. Jack Martin recommends bringing a stool. It will help stay out of the way and you can readily move it.
The Shady Dale Rodeo is a IPRA sanctioned professional rodeo event produced by Southern Rodeo Company for over 40 years. It has been voted the Number One Outdoor Rodeo in the Southeast many times.
The rodeo is located on Hwy. 83 just south of the red flashing light at the intersection of 83 and Hwy. 142 in downtown Shady Dale, Georgia.
Proceeds go to various Masonic charities and scholarships.

www.spsatlanta.org - Coffee & Critique - Digital EditionLink visible for attendees
Please join us for our June Coffee & Critique, which will be a “digital edition” conducted on Zoom.
For newcomers — we meet every month to share images and provide constructive feedback to each other on how to improve our photography. We alternate each month between online digital and in-person print critiques, and the meetings are for beginners and seasoned photographers alike.
For digital months, it is very important that you RSVP on the MeetUp site because only folks who RSVP will be sent the link needed to join the meeting. The link will be sent out the day before the meeting.
For digital C&C’s, participants may submit up to TWO images each for feedback. (A “before” and “after” pair of images will only count as one submission for those who want to “show their work.”) Please size your images as you would for an SPS competition — see instructions here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F0xzqEXvRfPl4T48zNbbasDSZ4beaOEU/view
Even if you don’t submit images, though, we encourage you to join and participate in the MeetUp. Our experience is that the critiques are a valuable learning experience even for folks who don’t submit images.
Digital submissions must be emailed to milsteenphoto@comcast.net no later than 9:00 pm on the Thursday before the meeting. Please put “C&C” or “critique” in the subject line. Jeff will acknowledge receipt of submissions, so if you don’t hear back from him, it means he didn’t get your images.
Your images should be titled with your name and a number showing the sequence of the submissions — e.g., JaneDoe1, JaneDoe2 — with the number reflecting the order in which your images will be shown. We generally show the final image first, and then show the "before" version, so if you don't want it in that order, please let us know.
The Zoom link will be sent out the day before the event. If anyone has any questions, feel free to email Jeff Milsteen at milsteenphoto@comcast.net.
