I've never had antojitos (Mexican street food) other than at 3 am in Ensenada, so I am curious to try Loqui. After we sample the food and this new and very casual place, let's move on to Craftsman & Wolves for a sweet snack or hot chocolate, then on to Hogs & Rocks to chill over a cocktail and maybe grab some more bites.

The home of the new Loqui, a Mexican pop-up from Tartine baker Cameron Wallace and his GM and partner, Mexico City native Ari Ampudia, is located between Tartine Bakery and Pizzeria Delfina. Loqui is using the space to serve antojitos, Mexican street food, including mesquite-grilled carne asada tacos on handmade tortillas and pelonas, torta-like buns stuffed with birria. The space is small, so the antojitos are served standing up, in the traditional style. (The restaurant has a list of rules (http://www.eatloqui.com/about/) that insist their food should never be served by a waiter or on non-disposable plates. They also ban chips and salsa.) At the moment, Loqui is open on Friday and Saturday nights from 7:30pm.
"We have set out to create an operation that captures some of these elusive elements. Our goal is to transport the customer back to the doña's kitchen in México where she was making handmade tortillas or that dusty street stand where simple delicious food is eaten while standing. We are not so concerned with the scope of our offerings, but rather with executing a few items to a level that would make our friends and family in México proud. The quality of the tortilla is the foundation that all antojitos are built on and the first thing we think of when creating menu items."
