Islip Saddle to Buckhorn Trailhead (hike option)
Carpool from Towsley Canyon to Buckhorn Trailhead
Distance: 11 miles with 3800' gain
Difficulty: Advance Hikers only, please
Hiking Time: 5 hours hiking, Resting time 2 hours
Trail Notes: The hike starts at Islip Saddle (6600') at the Mt. Williamson trailhead. From Mt. Williamson peak (8214') we will follow a unmarked trail through the Pleasant View Ridge to Pallett Mountain peak (7740'). Along the trail we take a 1/2 mile side trip to a plane crash site, worth the effort. At the top of Pallett Mountain is a good time for lunch. From the peak the trail drops down to Burkhart Saddle where we intersect the Buckhorn trail. Along this part of the trail a rest stop at Cooper Canyon Falls would be nice. The views and the walk in a forest is what makes this hike beautifully. This is a roller coaster hike over the northern crest of the San Gabriels. You will have continuous views over desert, Devil's Punchbowl, San Andreas Rift Zone and high mountain country. We will be hiking through a forest of Jeffrey and ponderosa pines.
This hike will require a short car shuttle (15 min's). Meet at Buckhorn trailhead at 07:45 AM so we can shuttle to the trailhead by 08:00 AM. This is an all day hike, the group might want to stop at Newcomb Ranch for something to eat and drink before the drive home.
Directions to Buckhorn trailhead: From Santa Clarita, take the 5 south to the 210 east (direction Pasadena). Exit the 2 (Angeles Crest Highway), and turn left over the 210 freeway. Take the Angeles Crest Highway to the turnoff to the Buckhorn Campground, which will be about 34.3 miles. The road to the campground does not have a name. Follow this road and the signs to the Buckhorn trailhead. Adventure Pass is required to park and there are bathrooms at both trailheads. This is 1 hour 30-40 min. drive. It would be best to carpool from Towsley Canyon park between 5:45-6:00 AM.
