Scripts & Things January

Details
6:30 - Doors open
Come early for networking, sandwiches, and drinks!
7:00 - Welcome
Since this is the first Meetup of the new year, we'll start the event with a brief discussion of our vision for this group. We'd love to hear from all of you about what you're hoping to get from future Meetups as well.
7:15 - Presentation: "Why JavaScript Matters for Embedded Development"
Andy Carle, Product & Prototype Engineer at Moddable
Consumer IoT is fundamentally broken. The vast majority of popular devices being sold today are strictly controlled by their manufacturers and closed off from developers. This results in devices that feature a disturbing lack of transparency, are impossible to fully customize to our needs, and are dependent upon online services that may or may not continue to exist over time. In this talk, Andy will discuss how scriptability solves these problems and more by allowing for safe, open, and customizable products.
7:45 - Demo: HACKberry Bionic Hand
Chris Krueger, Creative Director at Moddable
Lizzie Prader, Software Engineer at Moddable
HACKberry is an open-source 3D-printable bionic arm project. Chris and Lizzie put together a bionic hand using HACKberry's 3D model, replacing their circuit board with an ESP32 and capacitive color touch screen to control the hand's movement and gestures.
Have a demo you'd like to share with the group? Let us know! We'd love to have demos from members.
