Google's patents depict and illustrate current changes seen in SERPS. Rankings will impact Search Engine Result Placements in new ways according to these patents, Understanding them can help you target your content for specific templates/slots in search results.
Templates/Slots pertain to placing results (entities) in places such as knowledge graph panels, standard organic results arenas on the screen, answer boxes and more. Even more interesting is how those may pertain to actionable item on those same entities (such as bookings - hotels/appointments/etc and even the rumored "buy" button supposedly coming soon).
