Join San Francisco labor and employment attorneys Jason Brown and Annie Lau for an interactive presentation and discussion about employment law and managing risks in the startup workforce.

It is never too soon to have this discussion. As your startup grows your risk will grow with the increasing number of hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining decisions you need to make. Often, employment risks lie unaddressed in the context of rapid workforce growth, or equally so with rapid workforce reduction.

The startup world is unmatched in this volatility, and likewise in the level of risk a volatile workforce presents. And yet many startups focus so much on growth and culture that they miss evaluating the employment risks inherent in that growth, and of that culture. The resulting lawsuits are damaging, but often they are also avoidable, or at least mitigated.

About the Speakers

Jason P. Brown is a Senior Associate in the San Francisco law firm of Fisher & Phillips LLP and is a founding member of the firm’s Technology Practice Group. Mr. Brown has extensive experience in employment and labor law, counseling and litigation. Specifically, Mr. Brown has worked with many startup and emerging companies, guiding them not only in their early compliance initiatives, handbook adoptions and policy reviews, but also through early hiring and firing decisions, employment contract negotiations, and negotiating severance and larger scale reorganizations. Mr. Brown is also an active litigator, and brings with him the experience of seeing all forms of employment lawsuits from their early beginnings through jury verdict, or far more often, negotiated resolution.

Fisher & Phillips LLP is one of the top labor and employment firms in the country and Mr. Brown brings with him access to the firm’s deep employment experience in this unique field.

Annie Lau is an associate in the San Francisco and Houston offices. She advises and defends employers in all aspects of labor and employment law, including charges of discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, wage and hour, breach of contract, and other employment-related claims. Annie also counsels employers on preventive strategies, compliance matters, develops employee handbooks, policies and procedures, and training material.

In addition to her practice as an attorney, Annie gained valuable experience during her time as a human resources manager and intern with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
