Harvest fruit with Village Harvest - Special North SJ Orange Orchard
Imagine ... a huge 14-acre orange orchard filled with 1,500 trees, acres of the Valley's agricultural past seemingly lost among tech buildings and apartments in North San Jose. It's real, it's very close, and now you join us on Sunday, May 27th for one of the biggest harvests we've ever participated in, as we work to help Village Harvest finish off picking as much as 20 TONS of fruit benefitting up to 40,000 people! Don't miss this! === Join us in harvesting fruit trees from Silicon Valley's backyards! Village Harvest ( https://www.villageharvest.org ) was created in 2001 to bring together neighbors and community organizations to provide food for the hungry, preserve our agricultural heritage and skills, and promote sustainable use of urban resources. The Harvesting Program ( https://www.villageharvest.org/harvesting ) sends harvesting teams out into local neighborhoods to pick fruit, then deliver it directly to community charitable organizations who are able to redistribute the donated fruit to people in need. Participating in these harvest events is a great way to build community, learn about the challenges facing our local food system, and make new friends. WHAT WE WILL DO: We will meet up at one specific location where we will harvest THOUSANDS of pounds of oranges from one of Silicon Valley's last remaining orange orchards. Training will be provided so no experience is necessary. Tools will also be provided. WHAT TO BRING: Please bring water bottles, a hat, clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty, and a dust mask if you have allergies. Dress for mild weather, in layers. Gardening gloves and small hand pruners will be provided, but you're welcome to bring your own. Closed-toe shoes are a must. Be sure to bring a bag/container to fill with some of the delicious fruit from our harvest! Fruit that is slightly torn during picking goes to volunteers - yummy! WHERE WE WILL MEET: Orchard is located at 175 River Oaks Parkway, San Jose, CA 95134. Please park in the parking lot near the cold storage building at the North West corner of River Oaks Parkway and Zanker Road. OUR IMPACT: Volunteers help ensure that existing neighborhood resources are distributed to those who need it most. These fruit harvests support local food pantries and organizations including Community Services Agency of Mountain View, Second Harvest Food Bank, Sunnyvale Community Services and Sacred Heart Community Service. IMPORTANT: Please arrive on time and stay for the entire shift. If you are sick (with something contagious), please stay home. If you are late or have any issues, please contact Gezche ( https://www.meetup.com/Silicon-Valley-Volunteers/members/188026338/ ) (SVV) @[masked], Magesh ( https://www.meetup.com/Silicon-Valley-Volunteers/members/18615131/ ) (SVV) @[masked], or Susan Osofsky ([masked]) (Village Harvest).
