Barrier Lookout - On Trail 4. Moderate - snow shoe / winter hike


Details
There will be a mix of hard packed snow, soft snow, mud, and bare ground at this time of year.
Those who have snow shoes and can attach them to their packs can bring them if they want to. Those wearing snow shoes can walk ahead and pack down the trail for those without snow shoes. Hikers owning icers or micro spikes should bring them along in case they need them. Hikers with neither snow shoes or icers should be fine on the well defined and easy to follow wide trail.
Distance: 14km RT.
Elevation gain: 500km.
Destination: A fire lookout with gorgeous views of Barrier lake and the surrounding mountains, including Baldy, Porcupine ridge, Wasootch ridge.
Driving directions: Trans-Canada (Hwy 1) North to Hwy 40. Turn left at Hwy 40 and drive to the Barrier Lake parking area (sign) on right. Park at the potties next to the lake.
What to bring:
Layers!! The weather is unpredictable this time of year. It can be quite windy on top. You will work up a sweat on the way up.
Icers / microspikes
Poles
Snow shoes if you have them and can attach them to your pack if not needed
Thermos with warm drink
Plenty of water
Sense of humor
