Does history have a vector? Do we see dominant trends that will shape the future?
Humans have a tendency to assume that current trends will continue indefinitely. In the mid 20th century, novelist Aldous Huxley in Brave New World foresaw a future where people were controlled by pleasure, and living a carefree, but shallow life. By contrast, George Orwell saw future where people were controlled by fear and totalitarianism. Many people also believed that Marxism was riding on an unstoppable tide of history - yet, in 1992 , Francis Fukuyama would write that democratic capitalism had permanently won the day.
Yet, sometimes we see these trends disappear, and often, history repeats itself. Is there any way of discerning what trends will keep going and what will stop? Join us for another fascinating discussion, and join us at The Independent (5016 N. Florida Ave.) for drinks and/or dinner afterwards!
