What Should We Do About Cancel Culture? (Virtual Meeting)

Statues of previously revered historical figures being torn down. People losing their job after being caught in a nasty interpersonal interaction caught on cellphone video. Petitions being organized to call on college professors to resign after standing by positions that would have been uncontroversial just two decades ago. These are all part of what is now being called "Cancel Culture".

Yet it isn't a new phenomenon at all, really. The vast majority of societies throughout history have shamed or even killed those who held beliefs that were considered dangerous. The United States Bill of Rights, which included provisions for freedom of speech and religion, actually ran against this current. But even then, these ideals have not always held sway in America, as episodes like the blacklisting of Hollywood celebrities that were suspected of being communists in the 1950s shows.

Nonetheless, we are adapting to a world that has new orthodoxies quickly trying to assert themselves. Is freedom of speech and thought itself under fire again? If we regard certain beliefs as dangerous, where do we draw the line between freedom and public social health? If we draw a narrow space of what beliefs are deemed acceptable, are we taking the risk that before we know it, we may find ourselves outside the circle? Join us for a another spirited discussion!!
