ONLINE: “What did Emerson Say?”

Details
This is the Saturday afternoon meeting for Socrates Cafe. It's online. We meet every 2 weeks on Saturday.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was a philosopher and poet in the American Transcendentalist movement. He was one of the leading intellectuals in the United States in the 1800s and was once a Unitarian minister. His name is often mentioned in discussions of Unitarian history. Why then was Emerson’s 1838 Divinity School Address to a graduating class at Harvard so controversial? StoicDan will present the major points from Emerson's speech and how some the graduating students were influenced.
Emerson was influenced by the Stoics and other branches of philosophy, but this famous speech in 1838 included a healthy skepticism and criticism of the church at the time. We will compare these aspects to elements in society today. This StoicDan lecture was first presented 3
years ago.
MEETING FORMAT
The presentation will last about 10 minutes (recorded), and then an open discussion will follow (not recorded). You don't need to read any materials in advance.
