What we're about

Southampton Data Platform & Cloud user group has been running since 2010 (originally Southampton SQL Server User Group). In that time we have had many speakers both local and international present high quality sessions on a range of SQL Server and data platform topics. We host the user group at 2 Venture Road, on the Science Park at Chilworth on the first Wednesday of each month.

We aim to deliver high quality training and insight for free to the Data Platform community. The user group has been run by John Q Martin & Steph Martin since 2012, in which time we have seen the group grow significantly with members joining and moving on.

We are sponsored by SpectrumIT (https://spectrumit.co.uk/)who are a local recruitment company, setup by recruitment agents who have helped us by providing the location, Pizza and an Amazon voucher to raffle off each meeting.

As a member of this meetup group you are agreeing to follow the terms set out in the Azure Tech Groups code of conduct here (https://developer.microsoft.com/en-gb/azure-tech-groups/code-of-conduct?branch=azure-tech-groups-docs).

18:45: Mikey Bronowski - Arm your Bicep with D(i)SC - how to make your life easier while building new environments

20:00: Hamish Watson - Kusto Query Language - the next query language you need to know

Session details:
Arm your Bicep with D(i)SC - how to make your life easier while building new environments:
This little wordplay is about the Bicep a domain-specific language (DSL) and PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC) for Windows. We will cover the basics of both concepts, we will mention the ARM templates and show some examples. The goal of this session is to present the tools to those who want an easier way to create their environment or labs.

Kusto Query Language - the next query language you need to know:
Azure is the leading platform for many companies, and to manage your databases and other infrastructure you need to have insights into what is happening.
You need to be able to query the Azure platform, to not only understand your infrastructure but also to leverage monitoring and analytics to react to operational changes occurring in it.
This session will introduce you to the Kusto Query Language (KQL) which will allow you to query a variety of Azure resources.

About Mikey:
Data enthusiast with a mathematics background. Working with SQL Server for over 15 years. Works as a database engineer (Microsoft SQL Server) responsible for environments upgrades and migrations. Microsoft Certified Trainer with a couple of certificates. Blogger at (bronowski.it). Since 2021 Microsoft Data Platform MVP.

Not long ago Poland Data Community member, now proud UK Data Platform active member.

When not working or teaching, learns new things or attends various data/technical conferences and meetups.

Italian Calcio fan and traveller.

Agenda

18:30: Welcome and Intros

18:45: Andrew Pruski - Deploying SQL Server to Kubernetes with Helm

20:00: Paul Andrew - Building a Data Mesh Architecture in Azure

Session details:
Andrew Pruski - Deploying SQL Server to Kubernetes with Helm:
Helm is a package manager for Kubernetes which simplifies deployments to Kubernetes.
With Helm, we can bundle up all our yaml files used to deploy SQL Server to Kubernetes and package them in one easy to use format, charts.

In this session we'll cover: -
An overview of Helm
How to deploy SQL Server to Kubernetes using Helm
Upgrading SQL Server using Helm
Rolling back an upgrade using Helm
Chart Repositories

This session is for anyone who has worked with SQL Server and Kubernetes, or anyone who wants to learn more!

Paul Andrew - Building a Data Mesh Architecture in Azure:
The principals of a data mesh architecture have been around for a while now, but we still don’t have a clear way to deliver such a solution in Azure. Are the concepts so abstract that it’s hard to translate the principals into real world requirements and maybe even harder to think about what technology you might need to deploy within your Azure tenant.
In this session, we’ll explore options for building an Azure data analytics platform, following Data Mesh architecture principals. Turning the theory into practice. What data storage technology should be used? Does it matter? What endpoints should be exposed for the nodes in the overall mesh to interface and what resource(s) should sit at the centre of the Data Mesh? Answers to all these questions are more as we turn the theory of a Data Mesh architecture into practice.

About Andrew:
Andrew Pruski is a SQL Server DBA, Microsoft Data Platform MVP, Certified Kubernetes Administrator, and Raspberry Pi tinkerer.
Originally from Swansea, Wales but now based in Dublin, Ireland he has spoken at multiple events across Europe and America.

18:45: Alex Whittle - Power BI Composite and Advanced Models

20:00: Alex Whittle - Power BI governance, disaster recovery and auditing

Session details:
Power BI Composite and Advanced Models:
Take Power BI to the next level to support BIG data, as well as layering logic over the top of an existing cube or dataset for unlimited flexibility.
This session will look at composite models as well as Direct Query over Datasets to see how they can enhance our Power BI world.
Use this to combine different datasets into a single report, as well adding your own logic and data on top of someone else's dataset.

Power BI governance, disaster recovery and auditing:
As your Power BI usage grows you need to think carefully about how to plan and manage your tenant so you don't lose control of it and end up in Power BI Hell.
In this session we'll look at Power BI Sentinel, and show how this tool can protect you by taking care of automated backups, change tracking, auditing, enhanced data lineage, permissions and much more.

About Alex:
Alex is a Data Platform MVP, and is the owner and principle consultant at Purple Frog, a Microsoft Data Analytics consultancy in the UK with multinational clients in a variety of sectors. He specialises in all aspects of data warehousing, ETL, cubes, Machine Learning and Power BI using the Microsoft stack.
