Make sure you get there early for the 8:30 guest orientation.
I would not be a Public Speaker or have built a 900 person strong organization if not for my involvement with the National Speakers Association North Texas Chapter.
You owe it to yourself to attend.

Under a new FCC rule, anyone who uses a wireless microphone (or similar device) that operates in the frequencies between 698 and 806 MHz should have stopped operating their wireless microphone no later than June 12, 2010.  Your receiver should have the frequencies listed somewhere on the case or in the instruction manual.

The wireless microphones that had been operating in the old TV broadcast channels can cause harmful interference to these public safety and wireless customer services.  Therefore, all users of wireless microphones that operate on any of the frequencies in the 800 MHz band - including both licensed users (under Part 74) and unlicensed users - now have to stop operating in this band.

Please be aware that there are sellers on Ebay and Craig's List selling wireless mics in these frequencies.  Please verify that any system you purchase is not in the 698 and 806 MHz.  For more detailed information please

If your model is listed on the table, it is a 700 MHz wireless microphone and can not be used after June 12, 2010.

Dear Jeff,
Stu Schlackman
Stu Schlackman  President, NSA/North Texas
Thank you Randy Pennington for your words of wisdom at last month's program, even though many of us walked away with our heads ready to explode. We so much appreciate your dedication and contribution to our chapter!
It's hard to believe that this year is coming to a close for NSA/North Texas. It's been a great year with so many outstanding programs. This year's theme has been "It's All About You" and I personally want to thank our board for all their great work and dedication on behalf of our membership. I'd also like to thank Gary Rifkin for all his support this year. Michael Hoffman and Tim Cocklin for the incredible videos they've created this year. Thanks to Al Lucia and Sally Baskey for the leadership with the Charbonneau Academy. Thank you Dave Lieber for your excellent articles each month. All those that supported our Winter Conference shuttling folks to and from DFW and all the session hosts thank you! Thank you Doug Petersen for all you've done this year to support our chapter and Winter Conference with Bill Lynch. Thanks you Andrew Szabo for our Pechu Kucha events you organized and thanks for the Dick Bruso follow up session. I'm sure I can go on and if I missed anyone it's because most of the chapter needs to be recognized.
I've been honored to serve as your president.
I read a book that had a fabulous formula that exudes the DNA of NSA North Texas. Here it is:
Happiness = Results - Expectations
We are happy! Because... whatever we do as a chapter exceeds all expectations with such great results that we can't help but be happy. I consider us a family - our relationships trump everything. That's what we're all about-giving to each other and living with the attitude of "It's All About You"!
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving you this year!

Walk In Serious, Walk Out Seriously Funny
Q: Do speakers really need to be funny?
A: No ... only if they want to get paid.
Judy Carter - June 2012 SpeakerMaking speakers funny is Judy Carter's specialty.  Judy has been a comedy coach to NSA past presidents, CEOs, and even US Senators.  As a comic and spaker herself, she has shared the stage with America's top comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno and Robin Williams.  Her books, "The Comedy Bible," as well as, "Standup Comedy: The book," have launched comedy careers worldwide and received praise from Oprah Winfrey who said, "Judy Carter can show you how to make your sense of humor pay off."
Don't miss this morning meeting where, right before your very eyes, Judy will turn even the most humor-impaired speaker into a laugh riot as well as sharing comedy formulas to pump up your "funny."

Dave Lieber

My children's charity, Summer Santa, was holding its regular monthly board meeting. One of the board members made a presentation about a Frank Sinatra impersonator she was thinking of hiring for our Valentine's Day concert.
Whoa! I said. Slow down. I mean, I've studied the hiring of speakers, what to look for, what to avoid, from the speaker's end. So I know a little about this. The search for this singer sounded like it was rushed. I urged the board to continue looking.
And that's when we came upon Paul Salos.
He's the Sinatra singer who made a name for himself on America's Got Talent. After a board member sent me the link, I watched his video on YouTube and was moved by his passion for Sinatra. But it was his return note to our board after we contacted him that clinched the deal for us.
     He wrote:
     Hello Jenny.
It was very nice talking with you this morning. I have attached a few flyers and 2 music demos for your information. As you can see, I'm an International Artist.
I would be delighted to work with you to help make your project a huge success.
Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
     Paul Salos
     Dallas, Texas
That letter was so gentlemanly, so old-school. Who writes like that anymore? When I'm on the road and get an email on my cell phone from someone inviting me to speak, I write back quickly something like:
Wow. That sounds great. I'm out now but will contact you later. Thank you for finding me.
But as soon as Summer Santa's board members saw the little courtesies Salos extended in his brief note, we knew we had found the singer we wanted. We hired him based on his video, which is not so unusual, but also because of the feeling he left us with in his little note. They say it's the little things that matter. In this case, it was.
Michael Hoffman and Paul Salos
Michael Hoffman with Paul Salos
Salos gave an unbelievable concert. He looked and sounded like Frank. His band and his backup singer were sensational. The audience had fun. One reason for that is that NSA chapter leader Michael Hoffman, CSP, was the emcee for our concert. He and Salos made a great team. We raised close to $40,000 to send area children in need to summer camps this year. (We're sending almost 200 kids this summer.)
As for me, I took Salos' note and hung it on the wall near my desk. Now when someone invites me to speak, I look over at it and try to include Salos' key phrases.
It was nice talking with you...
     I would be delighted...
     Thank you for your consideration...
     It's the little things.

What You Missed in May with Randy Pennington
-We're only as good as the value that our audience receives
-Heroes are known by their choices and results.
-What results do I deliver for my clients? People want benefits.
-How do I affect my clients
There are 2 models for speakers to consider:
-Event Based-50 per year is good.
-Go deep model-fewer clients but multiple deliveries.
-Hybrid is a combination of both.
There are 3 things that affect your business - which one can you control?
-What the economy does.
-What your customers do.
-What you do.

We need to set ourselves apart from the other guys.
6 Choices that Lead to Consistent Results:
-Tell yourself the truth.
-Pursue the best over the easiest.
-Leverage the power of partnerships.
-Focus the energy-make the main things the main thing.
-Continuously grow, learn and adapt.
-Show the courage of accountability.

Start with the truth about -the industry-your topic/expertise, your business model and your talent.

Speaking is a distribution system. Look at the gap between where you are and where you want to be with your:
-Product- talent/expertise/delivery
-Professionalism-Financial position/business processes.
