What we're about

Stomptown is THE country-western dancing community for all LBGTQ and gay-friendly dancers in Portland. We dance every weekend on the 1st, 3rd, & 5th Fridays at Escape Bar & Grill and on the 2nd and 4th Saturday night at Norse Hall in Portland.

Come join our welcoming, friendly and diverse crowd for social dancing fun! Don't know how to dance? No problem--we do lessons, and you don't need to bring a partner! In fact, click on Pages to get more dance instruction and information.

And...we're volunteer-run! All funds go to support Stomptown activities--providing instruction and social dance opportunities and promoting country-western dance in and for our community!

All welcome--boots to sneakers, Wranglers to boas! Women, men, transgender and more!

A recent comment from Wil:

"This was my first time dancing with Stomptown. I wondered if I could find a few people to dance with and although I didn't know anyone there when I arrived, I danced a lot. I enjoyed my time there! People were very inviting and friendly. "

Country Two Step and Variety Dance

Needs a location

Join us every first Friday of the month at Escape Bar and Grill. No dance experience or partner necessary. Our lessons and social dance time is beginner and two-left-feet friendly.

Our July dance will feature a beginner two step lesson and then a night of social partner dance including waltz, country two-step, west coast swing, and some line dancing. Music starts at 7:00. At 7:15, Addam will teach the line dance “Thanks A Lot”, and then Rachelle will teach a beginner two-step lesson with social dancing to follow.

Check out our website at stomptown.org for some demo videos of our various dance styles and line dance lessons. Stomptown, and Escape Bar and Grill, require Covid vaccines. Please bring proof of your vaccination and your ID to show the bartender. Masks are not required, but it's recommended that folks have a mask on hand so if you get invited to dance with someone who prefers masking you are ready to go with them.

There is no cover fee at Escape; we do recommend a $10-15 donation which supports Stomptown's endeavors in our rented dance floors, the Pride parade, and other events. There is a donation jar and Venmo information by the DJ's table.

Escape Bar is one level with a few surface changes on the floor. Lighting is low. There are two single-stall bathrooms labeled as "sit" and "sit or stand." There is a small parking lot with one accessible parking spot. Do not park in the convenience store spots or the Boot Barn lot across the road- both will tow. There is parking on Sandy and the residential roads on both sides.

Two Step Night

Needs a location

Join us Friday, July 15th for a night filled with a variety of dance styles, focusing on Country Two Step. Dance begins at 7:30pm and at 7:45 pm , Emerson will teach the line dance “Suckers”. Following that lesson (around 8:15) Rachelle will teach a Two Step beginner lesson. After that, social dancing will begin, DJ Ra will play the best of two step, west coast swing, waltz and line dances until 10:30pm! No dance experience or partner necessary, we welcome everyone! The cover charge is $10.

Check out our website www.stomptown.org for some instructional videos of various line and partner dances.

Stomptown dances are vaccine-only. Please plan to show your vaccine card (or photo) if it's your first time with us. Boosters are strongly recommended.
As we're sure everyone knows, Oregon is removing the mask mandate on March 12th. With this update and the CDC moving Multnomah County's community risk level to green, we've decided to remove the mask requirement for our dances, starting with the March 18th dance.
We recommend masks, especially for those with increased risk. All choices around masks will be respected. If you keep a mask on hand (literally- on your wrist!) it's a sign to another dancer that you would be happy to mask up to dance with them. Dance with Joy Studios is located up a flight of stairs, and Stomptown uses both the main floor and a secondary floor down a flight of stairs for some lessons. Lighting is low during the dance with no flashing lights.
DwJ is in a residential neighborhood. Parking is available on the street. Bus lines are 70 and 19 with a small walk.
