What we're about

Our Tampa Bay Cycling meetup group is targeted for Tampa Bay area cyclists interested in joining together to enjoy biking in the Tampa Bay area. We offer multiple biking speed classes, some shorter introductory group rides averaging from 10 to 12 mph, some rides 12 to 14, and others that are 15 to 18 mph. We are adding leaders for some even faster rides. Please check each meetup for specifics on the average speed anticipated for the bike ride. Most of our rides are as a social, relaxed, but supportive group, in other words no paceline, and trash talking. As we add faster rides some may have a paceline, read the ride description.

Negative or adversarial comments, posts or actions will result in removal and banning of the offending party.

Helmets are required, lights are heavily suggested, and participation is at your own risk, a waiver may be required which leader will bring to ride.

Our founder Patrick Hodgson,  started this biking group (originally as Pinellas Pedalers) to meet other cycling enthusiasts and looking forward to exploring the many trails and safe bicycling roads in the area. Although all cyclists of all levels are welcome to join in, our rides will be from 10-90 miles, with most around 20 to 50 miles, and on occasion, a century ride.

We also like to get some of the members to join together to form a team to ride in the various charity events around the state of Florida.

All of our rides are posted on meetup. https://www.meetup.com/Tampa-Bay-Cycling/events/

We at Tampa Bay Cycling do not charge dues.

San Antonio hills - 66/68.4 miles - 2941/3164 climbing - moving avg: 13-14 mph

san antonio athletic complex community garden

Early start because I ride a steel flat-bar touring bike so it's gonna take some time.

Prepping for the Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo (http://www.cheahachallenge.com) in Jacksonville, AL - May 15.

The San Antonio route is at RWGPS https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38376335 . This is also a Randonneurs USA route so most folks can disregard any instructions.

Add Skyview loop for a few more miles and elevation.

These are open roads often without shoulder, expect cracks/potholes, occasionally a rider may find themselves riding alone so, safety first! Practice SAR.
* BE SEEN: clothing, lights (front and rear), some would even recommend rotational color e.g. socks. Orange is the safety color.
* BE AWARE: careful with music in your ear. Seriously consider a mirror. A rear facing radar may work but a mirror allows you to make a judgment call - continue or pull off. Point out hazards to fellow riders.
* BE READY: helmet, spares, nutrition, phone, ID, cash, consider something like Road ID.

STAY ALERT, STAY ALIVE!

Forecasted rains or excessive winds may cause cancellation. Check back evening before the event.

Mr. Ed's birthday ride (not THAT Mr. Ed). ~30 miles, 13-15 avg, 14-17 rolling

Whistle Stop Grill and Bar

There's an old Mister Ed that U may have heard of. He's a horse, a talking horse. This isn't about him, and this isn't a saddle-em-up horseback ride.

This bicycle ride is about Meester Ed, a friend known to many, many of us. He's even older than Mister Ed would be if he were still with us. How old did Meester Ed turn on Jan. 20th? Well, i know, but i ain't telling, cuz it's embarrassing that someone so much older than i am can out-cycle me so completely. Of course, U can ask him yourself if U show up for the ride and/or for the celebration afterward. Good luck with that.

We're going to Head East (insert Never Been Any Reason joke here) down Safety Harbor's Main Street and join Loopy Dorie's Loop there. We'll take the Loop the rest of the way around and back to Safety Harbor. For the uninitiated, that means Philippe Park, Oldsmar, Old Memorial Hwy, Town & Country Trail, George Road, Courtney Campbell Causeway (incorporating the infamous Bridge of Doom), and after waiting at the longest traffic light in three counties, Bayshore back toward Safety Harbor. We won't go quite all the way back to Main Street on Bayshore, turning off onto 7th and going north on 10th to pass the Crooked Thumb Brewery, and back to Whistle Stop. This is meant to be a social ride as well as an exercise ride, so we'll ask that U restrict your breakaways to hills, bridges, and the west portion of the CCC (after the Bridge of Doom).

After the cycling ends, the fun begins. Wait, i didn't mean that, the cycling was to have been fun, too. I mean the fun ramps up as we head to table(s) at the Whistle Stop to eat, drink, and celebrate Ed's birthday. No serious gifts are allowed, but if U can gently make fun of him, gag gifts are encouraged. Gosh, i hope my gift is gentle enough.

If U can't/won't ride with us, U are still welcome at the apres-ride festivities. If U can ride, but don't stay for lunch and celebration, we'll enjoy your company on the ride. Either way, if U choose one or the other, but not both, please let us know in the comments, so we don't delay the start and do reserve enough tables.
And, Mother Nature forbid, if the weather is so atrocious that no one but Minnesota Mark dares ride, we'll still have the birthday lunch and celebration.

All the usual disclaimers apply, including but not limited to, assuming all the risk yourself, being in shape, prepared for flats and mechanical issues, cycling safely and respectfully, obeying all laws, rules, and regulations, and anything else the lawyers would have wanted me to type here.
