Security Wargame! Join us for the Bandit challenge

Join us for a group walkthrough solving a few stages of the Bandit Wargame offered by overthewire.org. This is a free, online event open to everyone.

The Bandit wargame is aimed at absolute beginners. It will teach the basics needed to be able to play other wargames. More information can be found at https://overthewire.org/wargames/bandit/

This game, like most other games, is organized in levels. You start at Level 0 and try to “beat” or “finish” it. Finishing a level results in information on how to start the next level. The pages on the website for “Level ” contain information on how to start level X from the previous level. E.g. The page for Level 1 has information on how to gain access from Level 0 to Level 1.

All you need to play along is Zoom for the meetup and a secure shell client to access the wargame server. PuTTY is free and works great under Windows or Mac (https://www.ssh.com/academy/ssh/putty/download) or you can use the ssh command from the command line on IOS or LINUX.

This is our first time doing this kind of challenge as a group on Zoom. Please don't blurt out the solution right away for the current level. We want to spend some time teaching people how to find the answers for themselves, discuss the nuance of the commands needed to solve each level, and discuss alternative ways to solve the level. This is a learning challenge, not a race. We'll get through as many levels as time allows. If it works out and we're having fun, we can schedule follow up sessions to continue the challenge.
