WHAT'S ON THIS MONTH?
CULTURAL ASSUMPTIONS: THE COMMON GROUND WE DON'T KNOW WE DON'T HAVE
BY ADAM FIELD
Our cultural blind-spots can lead us to assume that others see things the same way we do. In this talk I would like to encourage us to challenge our view of what can be assumed when communicating with anyone about anything. Examining a case study of a Korean interacting with telephone banking security, I will invite you to consider how what we assume is normal can give negative experiences to our users.
ABOUT ADAM
I'm a computer scientist by training, with almost 20 years of professional experience as an English teacher, digital repository consultant, web & database applications programmer and open source community organiser. I'm currently based at the University of Nottingham, where I work for Jisc as an analyst/developer in scholarly communications. When I'm not working I enjoy board games, laser cutting, photography, beer brewing and travelling.
VISUALISATION: USER STORIES, KANBAN BOARDS AND ANALYTICS
BY GEMMA CAMERON
We all use tools to visualise and radiate information. In this talk we look at the different ways of visualising, why we’re using them and if there’s another way.
ABOUT GEMMA
Gemma works as a Principal Software Engineer at Coop Digital. She's also a representative for Tech Events across the North West and is the Director of Hac100, organising coding competitions for adults and youngsters alike. In addition to ferret wrangling, Gemma has a particular interest in testing, conversations, users and domain.
