Talk Summary

Developers today are flooded with a plethora of tools and jargon for testing web applications. This talk will walk intermediate to advanced developers through the basic concepts for testing web applications along with sound strategies for adopting a smooth testing workflow.

The talk will consist of three parts:

  1. A look at the goals of testing, and why it is a critical part of web development.

  2. An exploration of testing concepts and terminology.

  3. Demonstration of both end-to-end testing with Selenium, and Unit Testing with Venus.js.

Speaker bio
Seth McLaughlin has been working with web technology for the past decade. He spent several years at Microsoft, contributing to the releases of Internet Explorer 7, 8 and 9. LinkedIn was his next stop, where he spent time both building out site features and working with the central QA team.

While at LinkedIn, Seth became very passionate about testing web applications. He contributed to LinkedIn's internal selenium-based framework, and founded the Venus.js project (an open source JavaScript unit testing tool).

Recently, Seth moved to Shape Security, a startup focused on making the web a safer place. In his spare time, Seth enjoys giving back by teaching and mentoring for the Year Up non-profit.
