Film discussion: The Terrorizers
The Terrorizers (Director: Edward Yang) Edward Yang’s 1986 film, The Terrorizers, is a provocative look at the chaos and violence of urban life. Among its characters are an obsessive photographer, a part-time prostitute, and a married couple whose relationship hovers on the brink of collapse. Their lives will intersect in strange ways that will have far-reaching and unexpected ramifications for all involved. Yang, a leading creative force of the New Taiwanese Cinema, was hailed by many as one of the most important contemporary filmmakers at the time of his death in 2007. The Terrorizers lays the foundation for the later masterpieces that would cement the director’s reputation, A Brighter’s Summer Day and Yi Yi. Come on out and join us in a discussion of The Terrorizers! I'll leave a copy of Andre Bazin's What is Cinema? Vol. 1 on the table to make it easy to spot us (look for the salmon pink cover—you can't miss it). Note: This film is available streaming on Kanopy, which is available to anyone with an Edmonton Public Library card. Here's the link:

    What we're about

The Art House Film Forum is a discussion group dedicated to exploring great films of the past and present. Our goal is to foster intelligent, stimulating conversations about cinema by bringing together likeminded cineastes.

Once a month, we’ll meet to discuss a different classic selected beforehand. Those attending the meeting will be expected to view the film at home and come to discuss it with others. Our viewing list will be drawn from the works of classic arthouse auteurs (Godard, Mizoguchi, Tarkovsky), old Hollywood masters (Ford, Hawks, Hitchcock), and contemporary greats from around the world (Weerasethakul, Sokurov, Reichardt). Consider this like a book club, except for film.

For the most part, we’ll be focusing on films that are available through the Edmonton Public Library. This is to ensure all members have quick, affordable access to the films chosen for discussion. In particular, we’ll be relying heavily on films available through the library’s streaming options such as Kanopy, which includes a number of films from the Criterion collection as well as some noteworthy contemporary releases.

More information about those streaming services is available here:
