D-Day Dakotas at Prestwick Airport - Details to follow

Details

Details are still thin on the ground but I thought some members might be interested in heading along to Prestwick Airport over the May bank holiday weekend, beginning 23rd May. The C-47s are flying across the Atlantic to take part in the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy, France. Given that the main events are happening at Duxford and then in France, this could be a rare opportunity to see the aircraft flying in.

Copied from the Scottish International Airshow Facebook page:

"As far as we know there will be 18 World War 2 C47 / DC3 aircraft planning to park up at Prestwick over the May Bank Holiday weekend. We understand that the aircraft will start to arrive from Thursday 23rd May and most will not leave until after the weekend. They are on their way to the 75th anniversary celebrations of the D Day parachute drops and invasion of France. Not quite sure which aeroplanes will be coming through Prestwick but details are becoming available.

For the photographers there seems to be a mix of colour schemes which should see some sitting at Prestwick in D Day camouflage and markings. We believe others are going to be in historic airline colour schemes. We have found some pictures of a few of the aircraft which will be at Prestwick and if they appear as we see them below then this will be a historic event of incredible spectacle."

I'll update this page as and when I find out more, but please do comment if you know anything else. I have no real idea where to set up at the airport, but perhaps you do.
