This will be an easy beginner hike with two minor hills and about 3-5 miles of distance in our lovely Malibu Creek State Park. I'll meander from the last free parking in the area just NORTH of Las Virgenes on Mulholland Hwy at the Grasslands Trail crossing over to Century Lake. If I feel like it and the group wants to pick up the pace after we arrive at Century Lake, we may even meander through the shady canyon to the MASH site via Craggs trail. We used to go there alda time.
Sunset: before 7:30 now.
Dogs: It’s a state park. Let Fido stay home and watch reality TV.
Alcohol: It’s a state park. No alcohol.
Dangers: Landslides, coyotes, mountain lions, damn dirty apes, chocolate, happy hikers, ticks, deer ticks, dearest ticks, sagebrush, death, reality TV, whacky celebrities, tumbleweeds, slip and fall, meteors, invading TERRORISTS, mountain bikers, the CHP, Malibou Lake HOA, volcanoes, sudden cliff faces, falling coconuts*, selfies, sharks, fire ants, anteaters, fire anteaters, voodoo, telekinesis, poison oak, not paying attention, innocuous oak, cars, headlights, pterodactyls (look UP!), royal families, bubonic plague, North Korea, missionaries, North America, politics, etc.
Here's some great stuff I totally ripped off from Missionary Michael (who posted an AWESOME photo of a mountain lion). Thanks Mike!
[ ---- Pace and Ability ---- ]
This is a slow paced hike for the beginning hiker to get off the couch and get some air. If you are unsure of your level, please contact me beforehand. You should be able to hike faster than 2mph to keep up with the group.
[ ---- Responsibility ---- ]
I am an organizer, not a leader. More than that I am an infidel and thus could be deported at any time. I am not liable for you and any way, shape, or form. Think of us as just a bunch of friends going hiking, and eating.
I reserve the right to exclude you from the hike, but would typically only do so if I were concerned about your ability to keep up with the group, which can compromise the group safety.
You must be self-sufficient! If you find yourself alone in the middle of the wilderness, you must possess the skill set and common sense necessary to get yourself out of the bind without weapons of mass destruction.
I will not be acting as a sweep. There will be no sweep on this hike.
[ ---- Headlamps ----]
You must bring a headlamp for night hikes. No, a cell phone flashlight app is not a viable option. No, I don't care what color your headlamp is. I do however ask you respect your fellow hikers by:
1. Using the lowest power setting on your headlamp to get the job done and
2. Not shining your headlamp in anybody else's eyes and
3. Turning it off when not needed.
[ ---- Directions to the Trailhead----]
Take Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon Road to the intersection with Mulholland Highway, 6.3 miles from the coast and 3.3 miles from the 101 freeway in Lost Hills. Turn west at the light on Mulhollad Highway and drive 0.15 mile to the trailhead on the left.
[ ---- Parking ---- ]
Free parking is available at trailhead.
DO NOT leave any valuables in your car; windows have been smashed in this area.
[ ---- Permits & Fees ---- ]
No permits or fees of any kind are required.
[ ---- What to Bring ---- ]
1.273 liters of water, a charged cell phone, a headlamp, a snack if you need one, and a smile for everyone.
[ ---- Weather Forecast ----]
Hot. Getting hotter. Seas rising.
[ ---- Event Cancellation Disclaimer - Please Read Carefully ----]
Expected temperature over 90F at start time cancels. Organizer commitments, work travel, whim cancels. Rain cancels. Violent overthrow of non-ape governmental agencies by ape constituency cancels. Bubonic plague cancels. If a suitable alternate organizer is not available, I will cancel at least 60 minutes before the scheduled start of the event. Please double check this page and/or your email before you head to the trailhead to verify the hike is in fact still on. I would not want you to drive to the trailhead just to find nobody there.
[ ---- What if you have to cancel? ---- ]
I do understand from time to time emergencies come up and plans change, and if it does, please remove yourself as soon as you realize you can't make the event. Just because this is a web based venue doesn't mean it's OK to throw out common courtesy and flake.
*Note: falling coconuts kill more people than sharks in a given year. Selfies kill more than both.
