Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco's Next Door Shelter provides safe, 24-hour access to shelter for unhoused adults in San Francisco. The shelter is home to 335 homeless adults every night. Residents receive two meals daily. They can also access case management and mental health services through ECS’s San Francisco Shelter Treatment Access and Resources Team.

The food is prepared by staff cooks but we will help serve the meal. The dinner shift is from 6 - 8 pm beginning with a short orientation and continues with plating food and clean-up. There’s lots of room for interaction and connection with shelter residents as they receive their dinner meal. Some of the older clients and those with disabilities need extra assistance from volunteers to bring their meal directly to their table.

You may want to have a light snack beforehand. After the event we will head out and get some food and drinks of our own. We will surely be hungry by then!

It is extremely important to maintain a high standard of cleanliness when we handle the food.

All volunteers must be 15 years or older. If you are between the ages 15 and 17, then you must have adult supervision.

Dress appropriately in close-toed shoes, shirts with sleeves (no tank tops), pants that cover the full leg, and that you don’t mind getting dirty. Suit up! Take an apron, hairnet, and gloves. Wash your hands with soap and warm water and replace your gloves every time you use the restroom, shake someone’s hand, eat lunch, or switch from food preparation to cleaning. If you are sick or not feeling well, STAY HOME! How to get to Next Door Shelter

The shelter is on the corner of Geary Blvd. and Polk Street. It's best to take MUNI: east and west route take 38L-Geary Limited; north and south route take 19-Polk, 47-Van Ness, or 49-Mission-Van Ness. Parking is limited to metered street parking and will turn into free street parking after 6 PM.
