What we're about

The purpose of San Francisco Walking Dykes group is: to build community for lesbians in San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area while promoting health and wellness. Walking together provides a relaxed way to meet one another and also have fun while doing something healthy! Lesbians of all ages and walking ability are invited, though most members of the group are over 50.

Time: usually Saturdays at 11:00 AM but check each week for details

Meeting Place: It varies, although most walks start at The Conservatory of Flowers In Golden Gate Park (main entrance at the top of the stairs). Golden Gate Park is well known, easy to find and provides many beautiful paths and places to walk throughout the year. It is accessible for those who drive and for those who use public transportation. There are several public bathrooms and places to get water and beverages.

Ability: The women who show up define the walk (pace, endurance, etc.). In other words, the group defines the walk and not the other way around. So, you don't need to be able to hike for several hours (although it's fine if you can) or climb steep hills. You just need to be able to walk with us at a reasonable pace. Walks will be modified for persons in electric wheelchairs.

Weather Conditions and Meetings: If the weather is really nasty, most folks just won't come that day and it is understood that bad weather is reason for last minute cancellation.

Hi Everyone, The weather will be gorgeous this Saturday, with more and more blooms to enjoy in Golden Gate Park. Come hang out with other lesbian and bisexual women, make new friends, greet old ones, and get some exercise! Janet will be leading this week’s walk, and afterwards those who want to prolong the fun will walk to Pacific Grill for lunch before returning to our starting point. Last Saturday 17 of us showed up to celebrate our third anniversary and welcome our founder, Michelle, back to our walking community — a great beginning to our 4th year. As always, we gather at 11 a.m. every Saturday in front of the Conservatory of Flowers. Walks are level and last about 90 minutes, and are wheelchair-accessible. Dogs and kids are welcome to join us. There is parking available on Conservatory Drive (East and West). Conservatory Drive surrounds the back of the Conservatory of Flowers and turns just before and after the Conservatory grounds from John F. Kennedy Drive. JFK Drive comes into the park from Stanyon (stay right). The purpose of the San Francisco Walking Dykes is: to build community for lesbians in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area while promoting health and wellness. We welcome lesbians from every "walk of life" and aim to build friendships, provide support to one another, celebrate our differences and diversity while always recognizing our fundamental unity and humanity.

The usual walk leaders are not available or not inclined to walk in the rain, so this will be a no-host walk if you choose to attend this week. The park is always beautiful, even in the rain!
