If you did this hike with us before, read the directions carefully- this is a slightly different hike, with a very different starting point.

Even before Twentieth Century Fox bought 2000 acres there to film movies like Planet of the Apes, Roots, The Thornbirds, and How Green Was My Valley, MCSP played host to stars like Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, and Johnnie Weissmuller. Henry Fonda, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, and even the King, Elvis Presley, also trod the paths the Blazer stars will strut.

MCSP features rolling grasslands, sturdy oaks and sycamores, a tranquil man-made lake, a rocky stream, volcanic rock cliffs looming over a canyon, and- believe it or not- redwood trees. It's no wonder that wealthy men from Los Angeles picked this location to build their get-away lodge (damming the stream and creating Century Lake to duck hunt and fish on), or that Ronald Reagan chose it for his ranch.

Our hike will take us across part of Reagan Ranch on the Yearling Trail, then down Cage Trail (poke around in the bushes at the end of the trail to find the Planet of the Apes cages) onto Crags Road (named after those wealthy fellows' country club), which will take us by Century Lake. A side spur will take us along the far side of the lake for a shady, woodsy walk to see those redwoods up close, then we'll jaunt out to the famous MASH site, where the iconic movie and TV show were filmed- we might even do both if we're feeling frisky.

With the spur trail thrown in, we'll clock right around 6 pretty easy miles total. Most of the trails we'll be on are flat(ish), but there will be a spot or two along the way with some elevation- 675' all together.

This is a gentler hike. We will go at a more moderate pace than a regular Trailblazer hike, and we'll take more breaks. The purpose is to give novice and intermediate hikers who may feel they're not up to a regular hike a chance to get out and experience our beautiful trails. Faster hikers are welcome to comealong, with the understanding that the hike is geared toward those who want to go at an easier pace.

We’ll park in the service lot at the southeast corner of Mulholland Hwy and Cornell Rd (Cornell becomes Lake Vista Dr when you cross Mulholland). Entrance to the lot is off Lake Vista Dr. Parking is free.

Directions:

From the 101, exit at Kanan Rd and drive south (toward the ocean). Just past Agoura Rd, turn left onto Cornell Way (Way, not Road) and stay to the right onto Cornell Rd (ah, there’s Road). Follow Cornell Rd for about 3 miles, then turn left into the first driveway after crossing over Mulholland Hwy (Mulholland is the first stop sign).

From PCH, you can: Head north on Kanan Rd, then turn right onto Mulholland Rd to Cornell/Lake Vista and turn right (there’s a stop sign at the intersection). Turn left into the first driveway. OR head north on Malibu Canyon Rd, then turn left at Mulholland (there’s a stop light- Malibu Creek State Park will be on your left). Follow Mulholland to Cornell/Lake Vista and turn left (there’s a stop sign there), and turn left into the first driveway.
