Map showing trail route along North Fork of Matilija Creek to Middle Campground
North Fork Matilija Creek (photo by Caro Pratt).
Let's hike the North Fork of Matilija Creek to the Middle Campground and return via the same route. Hike is about 7.8 miles round trip with only 900 ft of elevation gain and on a good trail with several creek crossings (not much water now). The trail is gradual for the most part and hike will be at a moderate pace (<3.0 miles/hr). Trail is pretty shady but it could be warm (mid to upper 80s). Although easily accessible the trail and country seem remote with possible sightings of deer, coyote, bobcat, and a black bear or two. Trail is pretty much along the bottom of a steep-walled canyon and hike will traverse sandstone and shale of Eocene age that were deposited in a deep marine environment. I will bring a geologic map and say a few words here and there about the geology-if there's interest.
We will take a short break at our turn-around point and then return the way we came. Bring snacks to share, plenty of water, and a flashlight or head lamp; also head netting in case the bugs are out. I recommend boots, long pants and long sleeve shirts due to brush, yucca, and other things that poke you, and there's plenty of poison oak off trail.
Important: We will park our cars and meet at the Cozy Dell Trailhead along Hwy 33 and just north of Ojai. Don't be late and the cell phone coverage at Cozy Dell Trailhead and beyond is poor to nonexistent. There we will consolidate into fewer vehicles and continue up Hwy 33, make a left turn onto the small paved road that goes along Matijila Creek, and trailhead is at end of paved road.
Please be prompt for the meet-up point. We do not wait.
