About us
Trail Hiking Australia (TAS) is a hiking group for people who enjoy getting outdoors and exploring Tasmania's trails in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
The group focuses on building a supportive community that encourages people of all experience levels to enjoy hiking with confidence. Our events aim to make Australia’s wild places more accessible while promoting good preparation, shared responsibility, and respect for the outdoors.
We host a wide range of activities. Some hikes are suited to moderate and experienced walkers, while others are slower paced on easier terrain and may include urban walks. Everyone is welcome, and there is no expectation that you must be an experienced hiker to join.
To help members prepare for hiking and build outdoor skills, Trail Hiking Australia also provides a large library of practical articles and detailed trail information, with over 3,800 documented trails available at👉 https://www.trailhiking.com.au

AUSTIN'S COTTAGE - A CIRCUIT WALK THROUGH AUSTINS FERRY
Austins Ferry Cottage, 12 Austins Ferry Road, Austins Ferry, AU**Starting later on a Sunday so that when we finish walk Austin’s Cottage will be opened. Opening hours - Sunday 2pm to 4.30pm**
DEPARTING AT : 1pm from Austin's Cottage, Austins Ferry Road - see map
HIKING DISTANCE : Approx 8kms
HIKING GRADE 2/3 : Moderate. Walking up to top of Poimena Reserve. Some street walking/bush tracks and old railway line.
DURATION : Approx 2.5 to 3 hours (breaks along the way)
FACILITIES : Public toilets on route
TAS PARKS PASS : NoCall Toni on 0418 589 717 if you get lost, if you need a lift from Hobart or have to cancel last minute. We don’t want to spend time waiting for you!

From Austins Ferry Bay we make our way to Main Road and ascend (steep sections) to the top of Poimena Reserve, great views. Some street walking out to Goulds Lagoon then returning via a formed track accessed from Stoney Point Drive, Austins Ferry. We walk on part of the disused railway line (not long) then pick up a bush track which exits at Wendourie Parade, Austins Ferry.
Back to cars and Austin's Cottage.The intact early cottage of James Austin, of ferry fame, was built between 1809 - 1812. Cottage crafts and plants can be purchased.

Shipsterns Bluff START, Stormlea Road, Stormlea, AUTHURSDAY 22 OCTOBER IS A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN SOUTHERN TASMANIA - ROYAL HOBART SHOW

Terrain : Well formed bush track, some short steep sections, approx 200 stairs to reach the bottom of the Bluff. We have to go back up them 😁

DESCRIPTION OF WALK
This is a terrific trail that explores a section of Tasman National Park. It features amazing lookouts, nice places to sit for bird watching and sweeping coastal views of the rugged cliff edges. The area provides a habitat for diverse marine life, you might even spot dolphins, whales and seals amidst the big waves rolling in.The tracks are well-marked and well-maintained. The views are amazing and well worth the walk. There is parking, a shoe washing station, and public toilets near the trailhead off Stormlea Road.
