Trail Hiking Australia (TAS)

TWO SHORT WALKS TODAY - first MIDDLETON, then a short drive to VERONA SANDS (max 15min drive).

DRIVING DISTANCE FROM HOBART : 50kms (allow 1hr)
HIKING DISTANCE : 8kms
HIKING GRADE 2 : beach/trail and a bit of road walking. We will pick up a slightly rocky track into Charlotte Cove (only short and flat).
DURATION : Middleton walk - approx 1hr. Verona Sands - approx 1.5hrs
FACILITIES : Toilets at Middleton and Verona Sands.
TAS PARKS PASS : No

Middleton History Walk - Distance : 3.5kms approx
We start our walk from Esplanade Rd, Middleton. Plenty of parking along this stretch of road - either near the public toilets or playground. We walk up to the top of Beach Road (only huff and puff section on this walk 😂) towards the Middleton General Store to pick up the beginning of the History Walk. Back down Beach Rd to Esplanade Rd viewing other historical sites.

Verona Sands to Charlotte Cove - Distance : 4.5kms approx
This track follows the shoreline between two spots on the Huon River estuary. We will start our walk at the Boat Ramp, Verona Sands (turn left into Westwood Avenue to reach boat ramp). There’s a track which makes its way along the foreshore towards Charlotte Cove. Returning via same track and walking along Verona Sands beach (out and back). Great views to surrounding peaks, Huon Island and an excellent place for a post walk swim 🏊

Optional - Woodbridge General Store for a coffee/bevvie on way back home 😊

Grade 2 walk : Easy level walking on footpaths, gravel tracks. There are some steep stairs descending Derwent Cliffs (there is a handrail and the section is only short).

DESCRIPTION OF WALK : A lovely ramble around the New Norfolk township. We start at the Esplanade on the River Derwent and will walk up to the New Norfolk town centre for an explore. We then head towards the Lachlan River and make our way to Tynwald Park - completing an out and back side track along the Derwent.

On return to Tynwald we walk the Derwent Cliff Track - a photographer's dream. There’s a wonderful spot on top of the cliffs to have a pause and embrace the scenery. Definitely a snack stop 😊

We make our way back to our starting point at the Esplanade and hopefully get to see some beautiful boats making their way up the river.

PS. Boats have only recently been able to reach New Norfolk. The old Bridgewater Bridge lifting span was out of action for many years.
