Sound is a neglected sensory dimension in many user interfaces and interactions. The result is a cacophony of beeps and undefined noises that disrupt rather than enrich the user experience.
But sound is an essential, useful, engaging and sometimes even beautiful part of the experience we have when interacting in and with our environment every day. Sound is not the problem, bad – or inexistent - sound design is!
In this talk, I'll give an overview of the motivations and fundamentals of auditory display, sonification and auditory UX. I will talk about caveats and methodological approaches to designing sounds for interactions.
Finally, I will present some of my educational, research and freelance projects focusing on application areas such as the Internet of Things or multisensory UX design in exergames and health.
