What you hear is what you get: Potentials of Sound for UX and Interaction Design

Fakultät für Psychologie

Sound is a neglected sensory dimension in many user interfaces and interactions. The result is a cacophony of beeps and undefined noises that disrupt rather than enrich the user experience.

But sound is an essential, useful, engaging and sometimes even beautiful part of the experience we have when interacting in and with our environment every day. Sound is not the problem, bad – or inexistent - sound design is!

In this talk, I'll give an overview of the motivations and fundamentals of auditory display, sonification and auditory UX. I will talk about caveats and methodological approaches to designing sounds for interactions.

Finally, I will present some of my educational, research and freelance projects focusing on application areas such as the Internet of Things or multisensory UX design in exergames and health.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Daniel Hug, sound and interaction designer, explores the world of sound through art, design, theoretical investigation and applied research. He is the co-founder and co-director of the Sound Design master's program at Zurich University of the Arts, and an international lecturer in Sound Studies and Sound Design. With his practice-based and interdisciplinary research, Hug has had a significant impact on the field of sonic interaction design. As member of the steering committee of the Audio Mostly conference and founder of the sound design and consultancy company “Hear Me Interact!”, he connects the worlds of academia and business. His current interests include sound design for health tech and exercise, sound design methodology and participatory sound design processes.
