Uber Movement has recently released a new dataset, segment-level speeds which has wide applicability towards urban and transportation planning. Combined with the capabilities of Kepler.gl and other datasets, the possibilities for data-driven planning are enormous. Join us for a hands-on workshop where we explore these opportunities as part of the Visualization team’s ongoing Visualization Nights series!

Agenda:
5:30PM - Doors Open
6:10PM - Introduction - Kepler.gl, Movement Speeds [Shan He, Ben Kramer]
6:25PM - SharedStreets.io [Morgan Herlocker]
6:40PM - Urban Planning Data Challenges [David Shuey, OKI]
7:00PM - Workshop
7:30PM - Q&A
7:40PM - Networking
8:30PM - Event Ends

More about the talks:

Intro to Kepler.gl and Movement - Shan He @ Uber
Shan He, the creator of Kepler.gl, will give an overview of the visualization capabilities of the tool and how it can unlock users in understanding geospatial and temporal data. Ben Kramer, an engineer on Movement, will then introduce Movement Speeds, a tool providing historical speed data across various cities in which Uber operates.

SharedStreets.io - Morgan Herlocker @ SharedStreets
Morgan Herlocker will present an overview of what Sharedstreets offers and how it can empower the use of Uber Movement’s datasets. Then, Morgan will demonstrate linking Movement data with OSM and loading via OSRM for visualization in Kepler.gl.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization for Greater Cincinnati - David Shuey @ Regional Council of Governments (OKI)
David Shuey will present how a metropolitan planning organization utilizes new and innovative datasets to inform, validate and solve a variety of transportation issues: connecting people to jobs, new modes of transportation or driving economic development.

Workshop - Utsav Shah and Ben Kramer @ Uber
Workshop using Uber Movement speeds dataset and Kepler.gl to visualize and discover insights in local SF speeds data.
